Description
Driver Courtesy Indicator. Background. This invention relates to road-safety with particular, but not exclusive, regard to the safety of babies/young children carried in the rear of motor vehicles; disabled and/or elderly drivers who are liable to drive at a slower rate; learner drivers or those who have passed their driving test within the past 12 months; or drivers lost or looking for an unfamiliar destination.
Explaining the problem.
1: Communicating with other drivers to explain a situation without use of the horn which is often seen as provocative.
2: Existing signs are often disadvantaged by; a) Poor light. b) Bad weather.
c) Familiarity breeding contempt. 3: Road rage caused by misunderstandings.
What my invention does.
A) Provide an illuminated visual indication that a special circumstance exists which will be communicable to other road users.
B) Alleviate possible `Road Rage' incidents by communicating to other drivers that a driver is not being deliberately provocative.
C) Develop easily recognisable symbols which do not rely on the printed word so foreign travel would not require different signs, e.g.
i) sleeping baby/infant ii) elderly person iii) pair of crutches iv) A to Z v) question mark for driver on unfamiliar roads. Some important, but not essential features.
1) Initially signs to be worded in English, but the pictorial signs to be universal.
2) The sign to become illuminated slowly so that if turned on whilst travelling it is not mistaken for a brake light. 3) Sign to be coloured, possibly red.
4) Sign socket to be integral, or portable. 5) Various interchangeable signs.
Claims (1)

(2) The L.E.D. to be fixed to the rear of a vehicle along with the array of of lights/trafficators. (3) To be manually operated by the driver as a driving situation dictates. (4) To operate as a communication system between the driver and other vehicles (5) To have a series of, say, 6 (six) visual representations of differing situations e.g. "a baby is being carried in the rear of this vehicle." A "disabled/elderly driver is operating this vehicle, please be patient'' etc. (6) The L.E.D. to gradually light up so as not to simulate a braking light for instance.
