Abstract

A lollipop sign for stopping traffic at school crossings is illuminated by light emitting diodes (LEDs) 2 powered by rechargeable batteries 5. The handle 3 may be constructed from fibreglass or aluminium with reflective bands of yellow and red. A control box 4 to flash the LEDs and an audible warning may also be provided. The head of the sign is preferably formed from two sheets of impact resistant plastic or polycarbonate.

Description

2359654 1 I L L UM1 I NATED CROSSING SIGN The new illuminated school
crossino sign is a vast improvement on the sign that is oresently in use.
The old sign was dependent on the patrol oerson havina confidence and asserting his/her authority tn ston oncominQ traffic.
If as in many cases the person is lacking in confidence this can lead tn misunderstandinQ and confusion and has been responsible fc?r many accidents involvin( ' j children, natrol persons and motorists. In fact a Patrol person was fatally injured in Stockpnrt in November of this year.
The new illuminated sign removes any misunderstanding and confusion and the motorists can see that they are being instructed to stop. It is therefore a much safer sign for the user and of course for the children who are crossing the road.
It will also have a tremendous effect on safety in winter months, when in the morninq and evening light is very limited and will help in reducinQ the number of accidents.
2 ILLUMI.NATED SCHOOL CROSSING SIGN DIMENSIONS 460mm Diameter 5Omm Outer Ring 30Omm x 65mm Box See Fig.1 Handle 150Omm long CONSTRUCTION Two sheets high impact resistant plastic or polycarbonate moulded to form head of sign. Outer ring, the word stop and children crossing motif to be in translucent red, the centre box to be in translucent green and the remainder of the sign fluorescent yellow reflective. The handle to be made from fibre glass or aluminium tube with reflective bands of yellow and red.
All wiring contained within head of sign (or orinted circuit board), then leadinq down inside of handle to control box and battery.
ME7hCD OF OPERATION Control box with switch for stop, go and off oositions. ',,]hen switched to stop, nuter ring, word stop and children crossinQ motif flash for five seconds (outer rinc could be rotary motion or on and off) then continuous until switched to Qo when areen box flashes until switched to off. Battery rechargeable Nicad or similar. OTHER FEATURE Audio warning when lights an continuous.
