Description
2359331
The field of the invention
The present invention relates to hardware for supporting a variety of items such as cable trays, ductwork, cable conduits, pipework etc.
More specifically the present inventions relate to a self-locking support system, which does not utilise screw-thread fixings/nuts and requires limited use of tools during installation.
Background of the invention
The use of metallic threaded rods and wires to support various items is well known. Known rod support systems of conventional construction utilise threaded metal rods, which are locked into position using conventional nuts and washers. Typically this type of support system requires the use of various tools such as saws, spanners, pliers etc., to secure the rods and supported elements.
Due to the inherent characteristics of the metal used in the production of conventional threaded rod supports, cutting to length is usually required prior to installation using a suitable saw.
Conventional threaded metal rod support systems are typically fixed to the supporting structure/elements using either direct fixing inserts are by the use of proprietary metal channel support systems. In both instances of fixing, the metal threaded rods require support/securing nuts and washers to be fitted at both ends.
Threaded metal rod support systems are widely used in the construction industry to support a variety of building services elements such as duclwork, pipework, cable trays, conduits etc.
Although the conventional method of support using threaded rods and washers/nuts is effective the installation of these systems are time consuming and requires the use of various tools.
Description of the invention
The object of the invention is to provide a system for supporting a variety of elements/items in both horizontal and vertical locations, which requires the minimum use of tools during installation.
The support system basic components comprise of a non-metallic selflocking main support head, which is used in conjunction with either a nonmetallic support rod or conventional threaded metal rod and a lower selflocking non-metallic support ring.
In one embodiment the self locking upper support head and lower self locking support ring uses an embedded metal locking ring 4 which incorporates two curved teeth which are angled away from the line of the rod insertion and which upon the application of appropriate opposite force onto the rod, pushes the heads of the teeth into the face of the support rod automatically locking the rod and lower support ring in place. The application of a similar force onto the lower support ring pushes the heads of the locking teeth into the face of the support rod automatically locking the ring into place and providing support for elements fitted onto the rod above the lower support ring.
1 1 fhe use of angled teeth, which are cun-ed and are set apart vertically at the thread pitch of standard screw threaded rods provides a method of on site adjustment by allowing the support ring to be screwed up and down the support rod.
In one embodiment the locking teeth are formed by a separate metal clip 9, which is inserted into a pre-formed aperture within the fixing head/support ring. The metal clip 9 incorporates a locking tab 10 which fits into a recess 11 formed within the body of the fixing head/support ring.
The initial push on fitting of the support head and locking ring alleviates the need to clean up the cut ends of threaded metal rods, which is normal practice when using standard nut fixings.
The upper support head incorporates elongated shoulder sections 6 above and below the position of the locking ring 4, which is set into a recess centrally between the shoulder sections. The shoulder sections of the upper support head are tight fitting onto the support rod to provide resistance against unwanted angular movements/swinging of the support rod.
The support head and support ring would incorporate external flat shoulders 3 which would allow the use of a spanner or other appropriate tool if necessary to facilitate adjustment.
It is a further object of the invention that the non-metallic support head would incorporate two holes 2 which would make it suitable for both direct fixing to structures etc. using standard screwlnail type fixings and also for direct insertion into proprietary fixing channel systems.
The fixing head would be shaped to allow easy insertion into a fixing channel 1 but would lock securely in place when turned. A feature, which can be common to all embodiments of the support head, is the addition of a lower flange section 16 that allows the fixing head when rotated through 180 degrees to also be used as the support ring The lower flange section of the support head also incorporates slots 17 which will allow the insertion of a standard nylon cable tie and will allow the supporting of flexible cables and the iike. The use of a non-metallic rod supports provides a limited amount of 'on-site' adjustment after installation due to the inherent flexibility of the rods together with ease cutting to length.
In one embodiment of the invention the support rods are of a circular cross section and the fixing heads and fixing rings have matching circular apertures.
In one embodiment of the invention the support rods incorporate vertical grooved sections to allow easy removal of the lower support rung.
In one embodiment of the invention the fixing teeth of the support heads and lower support rings are formed with a number of individual embedded angled metal teeth.
In one embodiment of the invention the fixing teeth of the support heads and lower support rings are formed by a one piece circular ring 4 which incorporates of angled curved metal teeth.
