Abstract
235,930. Loring, F. H. March 15, 1924. Vapours, delivering ; fumigants.-In the treatment of flour or other food with sterilizing gases or vapours to prevent and destroy rancidity and the developments of mites, spores, fungi, or other life, the gases are distributed to a number of places in succession so that the treatment at each place is intermittent and at regular intervals. Storage places may be ventilated with the diluted gases &c., during or after the treatment. Oxides of nitrogen, chlorine or other halogen, sulphuryl chloride, phosphoryl chloride, mixtures of these gases with nitrogen oxides, and air passed through an electric arc may be used. In an example, nitrogen oxides prepared in apparatus 1 of the kind described in Specification 196,697, [Class 8 (i), Air and gases, Compressing &c.], are drawn into a chamber 3 by a pump 2, compressed into a chamber 3<a>, and distributed by a rotating valve apparatus 4 to each of the pipes A, B, &c. leading to different parts of a flour mill. The distributor 4 comprises a chamber 10 receiving gas by an inlet 12, a circumferential chamber 6 provided with a series of openings 7 connected to the pipes A, B, &c., and a rotating plate 8 provided with an opening 11 with dependent side plates 9 so as periodically to connect each opening 7 with the gas chamber 10. The plates 9 may be adjusted to widen or narrow the space between them. The plate 8 is rotated from a pulley 15 by a shaft 17, gearing 16, 18, and double epicyclic reduction gearing 21 - - 26.
