Abstract

An educational aid for multiplication tables includes a number of cards each side of which is inscribed with one of an identical multiplying factor from number two upward and with the numbers to be multiplied being spaced around and inscribed to correspond on each side of the perimeter of the cards. Only one side of each card is supplied with the answers. A card is mounted on a base placed on a table between a parent and child, or two children, seated opposite each other, one acting as pupil and the other as teacher. The teacher will tap the edge of the card to indicate the numbers to be multiplied whilst speaking the answers to each a few times. The pupil then speaks only to give an answer and the teacher only to correct. Roles are reversible, as previous knowledge of tables is unnecessary.

Description

1 o l- I Educational Aid This invention relates to Educational Aids.
2359181 Many adults and children who have finished their schooling are not conversant with multiplication tables and are thus disadvantaged in life. The object of this invention is to provide a convenient and fast way to learn tables.
Accordingly there is provided a number of cards each side of which is inscribed with one of an identical multiplying factor from the number two upward and with numbers to be multiplied being spaced around and inscribed to correspond on'each side of the perimeter of the said cards and with one side only of each card being supplied with the answers. There is also provided a horizontal base on which a card in use is vertically mounted.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example in which:
Fig 1. Is a perspective view of the base.
Fig 2. Shows base and mounted card, answer side.
Fig 3. Is the reverse side of Fig. 2.
The horizontal base serves to mount an individual card for use in a vertical position. Because the edges of a card are lightly tapped by a pointer the cird has to be restrained from sliding or moving on the base. The base ( Fig 1) therefore provides two parallel walls creating a narrow slot between them, which is roofed by a thin pliable material- in this embodiment a length of plastic tape finely slit through its width along the length of the said slot, the top edges of which are slightly overhung by the edges of the plastic tape. When the card is inserted the two edges of the tape are forced open and downwards a little into the slot below to retain a grip on the card. Figure 1 and Fig.2 show each side of a card mounted on the base. The cards are provided with calibration marks on each side (or the cards could be notched) to assist young persons whose motor skills are not highly developed in lining up the pointer to the numbers. By means of a different colour and format the answers on the cards are made readily distinguishable from the numbers to be multiplied. The cards are rectangular in shape and the base is made of wood, but obviously variations in materials used and alterations to the shape and design of both base and cards are possible and so it should be understood that within the scope of the appended claims the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically described herein.
In use the teacher and a pupil will sit at a table opposite each other. The card with the lowest multiplying factor ( x2) is inserted to be held vertically between tile jaws of a base with the card holding the answers facing the teacher. The teacher will lightly tap the edge of the card with the end of a pointer or a pencil to indicate the number to be multipliedstarting with just the two, three, four and five whilst speaking the answers 2 1 to each a few times. The pupil then needs to speak only to give the answer to the number indicated and the teacher only to correct wrong answers.
When these have been mastered the next group- six, seven, eight and nine are tackled and finally the remainder. The teacher will then tap numbers at random to ensure the answers are thoroughly memorized. The remaining cards are used in the same way.
Anyone may act the part of the teacher without knowing their tables and will be helped to learn them as they cheek and correct, as necessary, the answers of the pupil. For this reason two children can teach other, occasionally swapping roles.

Claims (6)

  1. An educational aid including a number of cards each side of which is inscribed with one of an identical multiplying factor from the number two upward and with numbers to be multiplied being spaced around and inscribed to correspond on each side of the perimeter of the said cards and with one side only of each card providing the answers.
  2. An educational aid as claimed in claim 1 in which the cards are provided with notches or calibration marks.
  3. 3. An educational aid as claimed in claim 2 in which the answers provided are distinguished by colour or format.
  4. 4. An educational aid as claimed in claim 3 in which individual cards are vertically mounted in use and supported on a horizontal base.
  5. 5. An educational aid as claimed in claim 4 in which the said base is provided with a slot thinly roofed with pliable material, said roof being finely slit through its width along the length of the said slot.
