Abstract

A woodscrew has a threaded shank (2) and a head (1). The head (1) has a number of teeth on its surface which allow the head (1) to be countersunk, when driven into a workpiece. The teeth may be part of the head (1) of the woodscrew or may form a separate structure which can be added to a conventional woodscrew.

Woodscrew.

The Woodscrew is a well-known device used for fastening materials, such as wood and plastics, together. It consists of a threaded and, usually, tapered shank which has, at one end, a head which is rotated so as to drive the screw downwards and into the material, by way of a self threading action.

However, to facilitate the screws correct entry and subsequent use, there has to be one or two preparative procedures to the material in need of fastening.

These are as follows:

Predrilling: Predrilling is the procedure of drilling a hole into the material to be fastened. The hole is slightly smaller, in diameter, than that of the serewhead shank. This facilitates the tight and sound fitting of the screw with the material. Without predrilling, the screw can and often leads to splitting of the materials structure.

Countersinking: Countersinking is the procedure of boring a cone shaped hole at the predrilled holes surface. This bore is similar, in shape, to the screwhead and, thus, allows the screw to seat itself flush with the surface of the material. Without countersinking, the screw would stand proud of the surface.

According to the present invention there is provided, a self-priming woodscrew.

A modified Woodscrew, which has, at its head, a series of teeth like cutting tools, soley for counter sinking the screw as it enters the material.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, shows a self-priming Woodscrew in perspective Figure 2, shows variations in design as applied to the screwhead.

Referring to the drawing Fig 1, The screw comprises a threaded shank 2 and having a cutting shaped head 1. The screw is rotated by means of a slotted, crossed or other shaped head, common and known 3. The screw is driven into the material by way of a self threading action and the heads cutting teeth countersink the material for a flush or Sunken fitting with the material surface. Figure 2 shows two varied designs based on the same countersinking principle 4+5. Figure 2, 5a, shows another variation on the same principle, but as an attachment to a normal Woodscrew 5.

Claims

1. A self-priming Woodscrew comprising a tapered and threaded shank and having a cutting/scribing/compacting/displacing shaped head

2. A self-priming Woodscrew as claimed in claim 1 wherein the screwhead has a cutting device, solely for the purpose of countersinking.

3. A self-priming Woodscrew as claimed in claims 1+2 wherein the screwheadscutting device is integral to the screw structure or in the form of an attachment.

4. A self-priming Woodscrew substantially described herein with reference to figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
