Description

1 2358618- A WHEEL ASSEMBLY The present invention relates to a wheel
assembly. In particular, the present invention relates to a jockey wheel assembly, which, in use, is connected, or connectable, to the wheeled chassis of a towable vehicle, for example, a trailer or a caravan.
Most towable vehicles are provided with a jockey wheel assembly which is usually connected, or connectable, to the towing bracket of the wheeled chassis of the towable vehicle.
As will be appreciated by those utilising towable vehicles, such jockey wheel assemblies assist with manoeuvring the towable vehicle, that is, when same is no longer attached to the vehicle towing same. For example, such jockey wheel assemblies are particularly useful for manoeuvring the towable vehicle so its respective towing bracket can be appropriately positioned to enable same to be connected to the towing apparatus of the vehicle towing same.
Generally, such jockey wheel assemblies include a shaft or stem, one end of which being provided with a rotatably mounted jockey wheel, and the other end of which being connected, or connectable, to the towing bracket of the towable vehicle. Additionally, and as it is beneficial to be able to raise and lower the towing bracket so that it can be connected to, or disconnected from, the towing apparatus of the vehicle, such jockey wheel assemblies are also associated with a screw jack, actuable via a crank handle, for lowering and raising the jockey wheel.
As will be appreciated by owners of towable vehicles, the raising and lowering of the towing bracket utilising a crank handle of a screw jack is a very 2 strenuous task, especially since the crank mechanism is prone to seizing up, that is, if same is not regularly lubricated and maintained.
According to the present invention there is provided a jockey wheel assembly which, in use, is connected, or connectable, to a wheeled chassis of a towable vehicle, the jockey wheel assembly including:
a jockey wheel associated with a jack for lowering and raising the jockey wheel, wherein the jack is a hydraulic jack.
It is believed that a jockey wheel assembly in accordance with the present invention overcomes the problems outlined above. In particular, it is believed that the use of a hydraulic jack, as opposed to a screw jack, makes the task of raising or lowering the jockey wheel, and hence, the towing bracket, a less strenuous one. Additionally, and as a hydraulic jack is a closed system, it is believed that a jockey wheel assembly associated with a hydraulic jack, as opposed to a mechanical screw jack, requires less maintenance and is less prone to seizing up.
A non-limiting embodiment of a jockey wheel assembly in accordance with the present invention will now be described below by way of example, and with reference to, the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a jockey wheel assembly in accordance with the present invention.
As illustrated in Figure 1, a jockey wheel assembly 10 in accordance with the present invention includes a jockey wheel 11 rotatably mounted between a pair of arms 12, which in turn can rotate about shaft or stem 13.
As illustrated, the hydraulic jack which is integral with the shaft or stem 13 of the jockey wheel assembly 10 includes a hydraulic fluid reservo)r 14, preferably oil.
3 In order to lower the jockey wheel 11 and hence, raise the towing bracket (not illustrated) to which the jockey wheel is attached, oil is pumped by the action of pump handle 15 from the reservoir 14 into chamber 19 via a first non-return valve 16 and a second non-return valve 18. Once within the chamber 19, the oil pushes against piston 20 which is connected to rod 21, which forms the lower part of the shaft or stem 13, via cap headed bolt 26. As will be appreciated, the upper part of the shaft or stem 13 includes a cylinder or sleeve 22, within which piston 20 and rod 21 may move telescopically. As illustrated, the piston 20 is surrounded by a seal 23, preferably, a nu-lip seal, to keep the hydraulic system closed or fluid tight. Additionally, the rod 21 is preferably supported at the bottom of cylinder 22 by a bush 27, preferably, a bronze bush, which has a flat machined outer surface to enable air to flow into and out of the cylinder 22 below the piston. Such bush 27 is preferably retained in place by a circlip 28.
In order to raise the jockey wheel 11 and hence, lower the towing bracket (not illustrated) to which the jockey wheel 11 is attached, release screw 24 is operated thereby lifting ball 25 from its seat such that the oil from chamber 19 can return to the reservoir 14.
Additionally, the hydraulic jack is provided with steel gauze member 29 which not only holds the non-return valve springs of the first and second nonreturn valves 16, 18 in place, but also filters the oil.
It is to be understood that a jockey wheel assembly in accordance with the present invention can by integral with the wheeled chassis of a towable vehicle or may be adapted to be connectable to the wheeled chassis of a towable vehicle.
Additionally, it is to be understood that although the hydraulic jack of the jockey wheel assembly described raises and lowers the jockey wheel 4 telescopically about a substantially vertical axis, it is to be understood that same can be adapted to pivot the jockey wheel such that it may swing from an upper to a lower position.

Claims (3)

1 A jockey wheel assembly which, in use, is connected, or connectable, to a wheeled chassis of a towable vehicle, the jockey wheel assembly including: a jockey wheel associated with a jack for lowering and raising the jockey wheel, wherein the jack is a hydraulic jack.
2. A jockey wheel assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein the hydraulic jack raises and lowers the jockey wheel telescopically about a substantially vertical axis.
3. A jockey wheel assembly substantially as hereinbefore described and with reference to the accompanying drawings.
