Abstract

A feminine hygiene pad designed to be held securely in place by means of a peak (1) that runs lengthways along the centre of the pad, held in place by the folds of skin around the vagina and allowing maximum absorption with minimal risk of leaks. The pad is also attached to the woman's knickers by a line of adhesive (3) and longer than conventional flaps which join together below the knickers. The invention includes different shapes for Day and Night time use, with the former having a tapered back to make the pad inconspicuous below clothing.

Description

1 2358588 FEMININE HYGIENE PAD This invention relates to a feminine
hygiene pad.
The present range of feminine hygiene products offers a choice between inserted tampons and pads which line and are variously attached to a woman's knickers. While the former offers security from any leaks there is the potential risk of toxic shock syndrome connected with the incorrect or inappropriate use of such products. Sanitary pads, while avoiding this danger, sacrifice the security that the inserted tampon offers. Although various adhesive wings have been developed to tie the pad to the woman's knickers, there is no guarantee that the towel will not move, leading to possible unhygienic and embarrassing leaks.
An object of this invention is to make a significantly more secure pad that will offer the confidence of a tampon without the accompanying health risk.
Accordingly, the present invention involves developments of the conventional sanitary pad to comprise the formation of a peak formed down the centre of the pad running lengthways. This peak, fitting the folds of skin around the vagina, would ensure that the pad remains firmly in place and provide a high level of absorption, reducing the risk of leaks significantly. Flaps extending from the centre of the.pad would attach together around the woman's knickers to extend stability and protection further.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure LDay pad Figure 1Night pad 1 The drawings show the feminine hygiene pads, varying in one design point between the Day and Night pad.
0 In both there is a peak 1 that runs lengthways from the front to the centre of the pad which is designed to be held in place by the folds of skin around the vagina and therefore ensure that the pad is secure. This peak will also draw the menstrual fluid into the pockets in the pad and make any leaking most unlikely.
The pad Will also be attached to the woman's knickers by a thick line of adhesive 2 that runs along the centre from the front to the back of the pad.
1 Two flaps 3 coming from either side of the middle of the pad connect toether 0 with adhesive underneath the woman's knickers without sticking directly to the knickers, allowing the knickers to move without dislodging the pad.
The Day pad is shaped specifically to stop the unsightly shape of the pad from showing through clothing. The back of the pad 4 is therefore tapered, whereas the Night pad adopts a more conventional rounded shape 5 for maximum absorption.
This invention offers a combination of the confidence and protection of a tampon with the reassurance of a feminine hygiene pad that does not run the risk of toxic shock syndrome, a rare but serious and occasionally fatal condition of which 50% of all cases in the UK are tampon related. It is thought to be caused by a toxin producing strains of the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and may be a particular danger to young women whose immune systems are still developing.
Besides this important health consideration, the tapered back of the Day pad takes into account the importance that pads be as inconspicuous as tampons, and the longer than conventional flaps fastening together below rather than being attached to the woman's knickers allow the confidence of greater movement while wearing a sanitary pad.

Claims (5)

1. A Feminine Hygiene Pad comprising a conventional sanitary towel base adapted so as to be held in place by the folds of skin around the vagina by 151 means of a peak running lengthways along the centre of the pad, fastened securely by two flaps that stick together below the woman's knickers and shaped differently for day or night use, the back of the former being tapered for it to be as inconspicuous below clothes as possible.
2. A Feminine Hygiene Pad as claimed in Claim 1 designed to be held in place Z 0 securely by the folds of skin around the vagina by means of a peak formed down the centre of the pad running lengthways.
3. A Feminine Hygiene Pad as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 whose movement out of position is prevented by two flaps that extend from the middle of the pad and attach together by means of adhesive below the woman's knickers.
4. A Feminine Hygiene Pad as claimed in Claim 1,2 or 3 whose shape is varied between day and night use. The back of the day pad is tapered to ensure minimum visibility of the pad below clothes while the night pad is more conventionally rounded.
5. A Feminine Hygiene Pad substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
