Abstract

A removable automotive gearstick includes a gear stick stem and a knob and has, at the base of the stem, a twist lock assembly 1. A security key 2 is housed in the twist lock assembly and secured by the locking mechanism. Situated in a gaiter housing is a barrel 3 which will accept the security key. Once the gear stick is inserted and pressed down it can be turned to 90 degree angle, and when pressure is released the unit is secured by an internal locking pin situated in the lock housing.

A. DESCRIPTION.
1. General Description of the Product.
The product being considered, as conceived by Trevor Moulton, is The Removable Automobile Gear Stick. The concept calls for the manufacture and distribution of a device to be installed in motor vehicles that would allow the vehicle's gear shift to be removed, thus preventing the vehicle from being driven.
To accomplish this, The Removable Automobile Gear Stick would be configured as shown in the accompanying illustration(see Chapter Four, Portrayal). The device would entail the installation of a modification of a vehicular gear shift component such that the shift lever could be removed and carried along by the vehicle owner, or left within the vehicle and S.ecurity Key be moved. The base of the Gear Stick would have a Key which would be removable and secured into the Gear Stick by means of the Twist Lock. The Key would obviously provide thousands of Key Combinations. For those who choose to leave the Gear Stick within the vehicle then the Key could simply be carried on ones person. To replace the Gear Stick then the Key is placed into the Base of the Stick and secured using the Twist Lock.
The Barrel which is situated in the base, will have an entry point to accomodate the Key. This will be sighted at a 90 Degree Angle to that shown in the diagram. The Stick i.s inserted and pressed down and twisted within the Barrel Assembly to turn 90 Degrees and face in the correct position. When the pressure is released, the Stick is secured using an Internal Locking Pin, such as is found on a Steering Column Lock Assembly. Toxelease, the proceedure is reversed and the Gear Stick removed, The proceedure will only take place when the vehicle is stationary the engine turned off and with the Gear Lever in the Neutral Position. The removal of the Lever will not only be a physical deterrent to the thief, but also a visual one, and can be adapted to operate with both Manual and Automatic Gear Levers.
With this configuration, a vehicle owner would be able to disengage the shift lever when parking the car or truck, thereby rendering the vehicle inoperable. This, then, would protect the vehicle against theft as, even if a would-be thief managed to break into the vehicle and start the engine, the vehicle could not be driven away.
