Abstract

The metal section, particularly for use with street furniture, has a cross section formed by a central element 1 with a closed tubular profile from which radial reinforcement ribs 2 project that are regularly distributed over the profile of the central element and which form guides for housing functional and/or surface finishing elements. The extrusion is preferably formed from aluminium with the closed tubular profile being either circular or square in cross section. The ribs are positioned at ninety degrees to each other and are preferably each formed from a pair of parallel walls 2a,2b between which the functional/finishing elements are housed. The parallel walls preferably include an undercut 2a'2b' for forming a retaining shoulder and which may be formed by fins projecting in from the inner surfaces of the inner walls. The section may also include diagonal cross-walls 3 that extend between adjacent ribs at an angle of forty five degrees and which may include axial drain apertures 4. The ribs may also have appendages 5a,5b at their ends that face the cross-walls and which form guides for finishing elements 7.

2358416 METAL SECTION FOR STREET FURNITURE STRUCTURES
DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a metal section which is particularly applicable to the production of street furniture structures of various types. Structures of this kind comprise, for example, supporting uprights and/or cross members, which must -be strong and resistant to wear and weather, while also having an appearance which harmonises with the urban design environment.
The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a metal section, particularly an extruded section, for example an extruded aluminium section, which meets these requirements in is a: satisfactory way. This object is achieved with a section having the features stated in Claim 1.
Further features and advantages of the invention will be made clearer by the following detailed description of some preferred embodiments, provided solely by way of example and without restrictive intent, and illustrated in the attached drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a cross section through a f irst embodiment of a section according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a section similar to that of Fig. 1, relating to a variant embodiment of the section according to the invention; Fig. 3 is a partial exploded perspective view of an upright made with the section of Figure 1; Fig. 4 shows an application of the upright of Figure 3; Fig. 5 shoWs, in a partially exploded perspective view, an upright interacting with a supporting arm accessory; Fig. 6 shows an application of the upright of Figure 5, for the construction of a canopy; and Fig. 7 shows, again in a perspective view and schematically, an application of a cross-member made with the 2 section of Fig. 1 and forming part of the supporting strc u re of a bench.
As shown, the extruded section according to the inv i)n is essentially formed by a central tubular element 1 from o -e peripheral surface a plurality of radial ribs 2 project, t e e being regularly distributed; in the case shown, four radiall its 2 are placed at 900 to each other.
More precisely, and according to a first advanta3 OILS characteristic of the invention, each rib is formed bv tl ro parallel walls 2a., 2b spaced a small distance apart, which 1:01 m a channel open towards the outside; this channel acts ia a guide, as described in further detail below. Additionally, each wall 2a of each rib 2 is joined t he wall 2b of a rib in its immediate proximity by a stiff. Aing cross-member 3, preferably having a drain aperture 4 11 4 central position. more particularly, and according to the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the strip 6 is made from metal - also by aluminium extrusion, for example and has an aperture into which an element 8 is fitted. The latter can be a finishing element, as shown in Figure 1, consisting for example of a strip of wood which has undergone a finishing and weatherproofing treatment.

When the strip 6 with the corresponding finishing element 8 has been prepared, it can be inserted axially into the section, the appendages 6a, 6b being slid into the undercuts 2a' and 2bl, where they are retained by the corresponding shoulders of the walls 2a and 2b of the section.
Covering elements 7 can be fixed on the cross-members 3, 4 in a similar way to what has been described for the elements 6, . 25 8. As also shown in Figure 1, the elements 7 can be, for example, lengths of stone, stoneware or other ceramic material, or again strips of wood, for example laminated wood, treated to make them weatherproof.
In this cage also, the elements 7 can be inserted into the undercuts formed under the appendages 5a, 5b by sliding them axially from one end of the section.
Figure 2 shows an alternative embodiment of the section according to the invention, which comprises: a central tubular body 1A having a square section, ribs 2A which project from the flat walls of this central square-section body, and diagonal 4 cross-members 3A which are completely smooth, in other cl-d-.

Figure 3 siows how an upright of this type can be cowlel at its top by a simple plate 9 having edges 9a which are fcIdeJ downwards at right angles and are of such a size that they E1SD engage in the guides formed by the appendages Sa, 5b, 1 Zor subsequent fixing, by means of screws for example. In lthis configuration, the upright can have many applications,l for 1 example as a post supporting advertising hoardings or similla - 1 1 1 as shown schematically in Figure 4 - which can be fixed by means of functional elements (not shown, but consisting, for example, of brackets) which are engaged with the ribs 2 of the section and fixed to them with bolts or the like.
Figure 5 also shows the same upright 1, 2, used in this case to support on its top a projecting pair of arms 10a, lob; this configuration can be used, for example, for a pair of supporting arms of a canopy (as shown schematically in Fig. 6).
In this arrangement, it should be noted that the two arms 10a, lob form a single unit with a central block 10c. This one-piece assembly can be fitted on to the top of the post formed with the section according to the invention, as follows:
- on the one hand, by sliding the block loc into the central tubular body 1, and is - on the other hand, by inserting the blade-shaped bases of the arms 10a, lob into the guides corresponding to two diametrically opposite ribs 2 of the section, after the removal a portion of the wall of the tube 1, in other words the base of the rib 2, of suitable width and height to permit the insertion of said arms.
Finally, Figure 7 shows another application of the section according to the invention, namely as a horizontal cross-member forming the main supporting frame of a bench. The configuration of the section is again as shown in Figure 1, in which the guides formed on the cross-member 3, 4 carry finishing strips, made from wood for example, as described above. At the same time, the guides formed on the ribs 2 are used as follows:
- on one hand, for. fixing metal plates lia, llb, forming the opposite en4s of a strip of sheet material 11 shaped in such a way as to form an armrest of the bench; and - on the other hand, for fixing plates 12a, 12b, which extend to form the supporting legs of the bench with which it stands on the ground.
In both cases, since the plates 11 and 12 must be f ixed very firmly to the ribs 2, for the purposes of the illustrated 6 function, the ends of these plates must be fixed iiq a particularly secure and stable way, for example by weldinj h m to a strip 6 - or to a length of strip 6 - in such a way. L --o make this fixture durable.

Claims (12)

1. Metal section, particularly for street furniture, characterised in that it has a cross section formed by a central element (1) with a closed tubular prof ile, from which radial reinforcing ribs (2) project, these ribs being regularly distributed over the profile of the central element (1), and in that said ribs are shaped in such a way as to f orm guides for housing functional and/or surface finishing elements. 10
2. Metal section according to Claim 1, characterised in that it is formed by extrusion of aluminium.

7 Metal section according to claim 6, characterised in that each of said parallel walls (2a, 2b, 2A') has an undercut area (2al, 2b', 2A1) forming a retaining shoulder.
8 Metal section according to Claim 7, characterised in that said undercut area (2A") is formed by a fin (2B) projecting from the inner surfaGe of the corresponding wall (2A').
9. Metal section according to Claim 1 or 2, characterised in that it also comprises a diagonal cross-wall (3, 4) between each adjacent pair of ribs (2) of the section.
10. Metal section according to Claim 5 and 91 characterised in that said cross-wall (3, 4) is positioned at 450 to each of the adjacent ribs.
