Abstract

A filter delivery and/or collection system for use with light photon detecting apparatus, comprises an upstanding tube 10 for receiving filter papers 15/16 each held in an individual holder 14 and two toothed wheels 12 angularly moveable about horizontal axes to deliver filter papers to a surface below the tube or to receive filter papers and retain them in the tube. Light photon detecting apparatus including filter paper delivery and/or collection systems as described is also disclosed (see figs 1 and 3).

Description

2358183 LIGHT PHOTON DETECTING APPARATUS AND A FILTER DELIVERY AND/OR
COLLECTION SYSTEM THEREFOR This invention relates to light photon detecting apparatus and a filter delivery and/or collection system therefor.
It is known to use light photon detecting apparatus, such as is, for example, described in GB-A-2218803, to check for contamination by bacteria. The known apparatus can only check a single sample at a time and the process of checking a large number of samples is slow.
The present invention seeks to provide light photon detecting apparatus which will speeden up the checking process and in particular seeks to provide a filter delivery and/or collection system for such apparatus.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a filter delivery and/or collection system for use with light photon detecting apparatus, comprising an upstanding tube for receiving filter papers each held in an individual holder and two toothed wheels disposed adjacent to the lower end of the tube and angularly movable about horizontal or substantially horizontal axes to deliver filter papers to a surface below the tube or to receive filter papers and retain them in the tube.
Preferred and/or optional features of the first aspect of the invention are set forth in claims 2 to 4.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided light photon detecting apparatus comprising a filter paper delivery system for delivering filter papers onto an indexable support surface, an impregnating device for impregnating the filter papers with a sample to be checked, an injection device for injecting reagents onto the filter papers, one or more light photon detectors for detecting light photons emitted from the reagent injected samples, and a filter paper collection system for collecting filter papers from the support surface.
Preferred and/or optional features of the second aspect of the invention are set out in claims 7 and 8.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a fragmentary, diagrammatic, perspective view of one embodiment of a filter delivery and/or collection system according to the first aspect of the invention, Figure 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view through the filter delivery and/or collection system shown in Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a schematic plan view of one embodiment of light photon detecting apparatus according to the second aspect of the invention.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the filter delivery and/or collection system shown therein is chiefly intended for use with light photon detecting apparatus of the type shown schematically in Figure 3.
The delivery and/or collection system comprises a plurality of upstanding tubes 10, typically four in number, spaced apart above a circular support surface 11.
The delivery and/or collection system also comprises two toothed wheels 12 mounted immediately below each tube 10. The toothed wheels are diametrically opposed to one another with respect to each tube 10 and are angularly movable about respective horizontal axes which are parallel to one another. The delivery system in particular also includes a mechanism (not shown) for indexing the two wheels 12 in synchronism with one another and a control circuit (also not shown) for indexing the wheels 12 as and when required.
When used as a filter delivery system, each tube contains a stack of sterile filter papers 13 each of which is held in an individual holder 14. Each holder 14 comprises two annular parts 15 and 16 and the filter paper 13 is secured between the two parts. The external diameter of the part 15 is smaller than the external diameter of the part 16 so that when the holders 14 are stacked one upon another an annular recess is provided between the larger diameter parts 16 of two adjacent holders 14 for receiving teeth of the toothed wheels 12.
-4 When serving as a filter delivery system, the two toothed wheels 12 are indexed in opposite angular directions and, as shown in Figure 2, the left hand wheel is indexed in a clockwise direction and the right hand wheel is indexed in a counter clockwise direction. This will cause a filter paper 13 together with its holder 14 to drop onto the circular supporting surface 11.
The tubes 10, when full of filter papers 13, can be provided with removable seals at their lower ends.
When used as a filter collection system, the filter paper 13 and holder 14 are raised above the supporting surface 11 by a plunger or ram (not shown) mounted in the supporting surface 11. In this case, the toothed wheels 12 will simply operate as ratchets or can be driven in synchronism with the rising plunger or ram.
Referring now to Figure 3, there is shown therein light photon detecting apparatus comprising a circular carousel 20 which can be indexed by a drive unit (not shown). The apparatus has five stations. In one station, there is provided a filter paper delivery system 21 which may be similar to that described with reference to Figures I and 2. At the next station, there is an impregnating device 22 for impregnating the filter papers with a water sample or an air sample. At the next station, there is an injection device 23 for injecting reagents such as, for example, detergent for cell disruption and luciferin-luciferase for reaction with released ATP molecules and/or other chemicals as appropriate for the test to be carried out. At the next station, there is a multiple light photon detector or a plurality of single photon -5 detectors 24, the design of which can be based on the design of the light photon detector described in GB-A-2218803, for detecting light photons emitted from the reagent injected samples. At the final station, there is a filter paper collection system 25, which may be similar to that described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 for collecting used filter papers for autoclaving.
The tubes 10 of the filter delivery and collection system may be removable from their positions above the carousel 20 so that empty tubes from the delivery system can be used in the collection system.
This apparatus will allow continuous monitoring of samples with time intervals regulated by software. It also provides a facility to carry out comparative tests, simultaneously and or replicates of the same test.

Claims (9)

-6CLAIMS A filter delivery and/or collection system for use with light photon detecting apparatus, comprising an upstanding tube for receiving filter papers each held in an individual holder and two toothed wheels disposed adjacent to the lower end of the tube and angularly movable about horizontal or substantially horizontal axes to deliver filter papers to a surface below the tube or to receive filter papers and retain them in the tube.

2. A system as claimed in claim 1, in combination with a plurality of filter papers each in an individual holder.

A system as claimed in claim 2, wherein the holders each comprise two annular parts with a filter paper secured therebetween, one of the two parts having a smaller external dimension than the other so that when the holders are stacked one upon another a space is provided between the larger dimension parts of two adjacent holders for receiving teeth of the toothed wheels.
4. A system as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, comprising a plurality of tubes for delivering and/or collecting a plurality of filter papers.
5. A filter delivery and/or collection system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. Light photon detecting apparatus comprising a filter paper delivery system for delivering filter papers onto a support surface, an impregnating device for impregnating the filter papers to a sample to be checked, an injection device for injecting reagents onto the filter papers, one or more light photon detectors for detecting light photons emitted from the reagent injected samples, and a filter paper collection system for collecting filter papers from the support surface.
7. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6, further comprising means for indexing the support surface.
8. Apparatus as claimed in claim 6 or claim 7, wherein the filter paper delivery system and/or the filter paper collection system is as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 5.
9. Light photon detecting apparatus substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
