Abstract
A camera (1) at a first location produces images which, on the occurrence of an alarm condition from a sensor (8), are forwarded by a computer (2) as a web page to an Internet server (5). A message may be forwarded to a user via cellular telephone (3, 4). The user can access the web page from any computer (6) at a second location and thus view events at the first location. The web site at the server (5) contains data which enables the user to use the same Internet connection to control devices (13) at the first location without the remote computer (6) holding any dedicated programs or data.
Description
2357387 1 "Remote Viewing and Security System" 2 3 This invention relates
to a computer-based system for 4 remote viewing and storage of video images, and may be used for a variety of purposes but is of 6 particular interest in relation to security.
7 8 Systems if this general nature are known. However, 9 existing systems rely on the use of special software and/or hardware at both ends of the system. This 11 means that images of the site of interest can only be 12 viewed from a particular remote computer, which is 13 not always possible for the user.
14 Also, so-called "Web Cameras" allow remote viewing of 16 a site using any computer with a suitable web browser 17 and communications link, but neither the camera nor 18 any adjacent devices can be operated from the remote 19 location, information flow is restricted. This is because on Internet server software for reasons of 2 1 security of data access. A web camera has little 2 usefulness as a security system because it has no 3 ability to alert a remote location to activity in the 4 field of view. Another disadvantage is that it must be permanently on-line regardless of whether or not 6 it is being viewed, unless the video origination 7 computer is manned. This fact means that web cameras 8 are usually only installed at locations which have a 9 permanent leased line connection.
11 An object of the present invention is to provide an 12 improved remote viewing and storage system, the 13 system preferably also being capable of remote 14 control of devices at the video origination end.
16 The present invention accordingly provides a method 17 of communicating images from a first location to a 18 second location, the method comprising: forming a 19 digital image at said first location; creating a web page containing said image; uploading the web page to 21 a remote server; and causing the web page to be 22 downloaded at said second location.
23 24 From another aspect, the invention provides apparatus for use at the first location in the foregoing 26 method; the apparatus comprising a camera, and a 27 computer interfaced with the camera; the computer 28 being provided with means for accessing a telecom 29 network; and the computer being arranged to respond to the occurrence of a specified event to create a 31 web page incorporating image data from the camera and 3 upload the web page to a remote server.
2 3 In preferred forms of the invention, low-bandwidth 4 data may be passed from the second location to the first location over the same network connection, for 6 controlling devices at the first location.
7 8 9 An embodiment of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the drawings, in 11 which:
12 13 Figure 1 is an overview of one example of the 14 system, for use with the Internet; and Figure 2 shows the information transfer 16 mechanism of the system of Figure 1.
17 18 In Figure 1, a video origination computer 2 is 19 connected to interface hardware 12 which interfaces the computer 2 to a camera 1 and to a magnetic door 21 switch B. The computer 2 is also connected by means 22 of a dial-up phone connection 9 to the telecom 23 network 7. If the door is opened, a signal from the 24 door switch 8 causes the computer 2 to start recording images from the camera 1 to its local 26 storage device (usually a hard disc drive) The 27 computer 2 then dials up the user's mobile phone 4 28 via the telecom network 7 and the cellular phone 29 exchange 3. This alerts the user to the fact that the door has been opened and the camera 1 is 31 recording, and the fact that the computer 2 is about 4 1 to go on-line on the Internet to upload the local 2 recording after applying data compression techniques 3 to minimise the time to upload. Any electronic 4 messaging means, not simply cellular telephone, may be used to alert a specified person; for example 6 paging or e-mail.
7 8 The user may then go to a viewing computer 6 (for 9 example by using a laptop or an Internet caf6) and open a web browser. Whichever type of computer is 11 used, the user simply launches a web browser and 12 types in the name of the web site stored on the 13 Internet service computer 5.
14 While he is doing this, the originating computer 2 16 proceeds to connect to the Internet server 5 by means 17 of the dial-up connection 9, the telecom network 7 18 and a leased line 11. Then it uploads an up-to-date 19 web page containing the names of all the stored video clips already on the web site plus the new one it is 21 about to upload. It then uploads the new video clip, 22 and then starts to "live" upload so that the user can 23 see a current view of the door as well as what 24 happened when the door was opened. This live connection can be set to be maintained for a specific 26 time, or be permanent, or be cancelled remotely by 27 the user.
28 29 The user is now connected to the Internet service provider 5 and the web page is downloaded by the 31 browser, along with its Java applet (s). The web page 1 has a list of recorded events that can be downloaded 2 from the web site and replayed by the viewing 3 computer 6 simply by clicking buttons on the web 4 page. Uniquely, the user can also click other buttons which, as will be described, can sends 6 information back to the originating computer 2 to do 7 a variety of things such as pan,. tilt and zoom the 8 camera, or activate an alarm 13, or make the computer 9 2 disconnect from the Internet. The user can also see the live video feed by clicking buttons on the web 11 page as long as the originating computer 2 is on 12 line.
13 14 In Figure 2 the data transfer mechanisms are set out more clearly. The three computers 2, 5 and 6 are 16 represented schematically as square boxes containing 17 programs or files. The originating computer 2 is 18 running the main software package 14 which controls 19 the system. It uploads image f iles 16 and the web page 18 to the server computer S. The server computer 21 5 also contains small dummy image f iles 17. At the 22 viewing computer 6, in this instance, Microsoft 23 Explorer web browser 19 is run by the user. This 24 program is shipped as part of the computer's operating system and is always present.
26 27 Explorer 19 af ter being told by the user to go to the 28 correct website will automatically download the web 29 page and is associated Java applet (s) 18. Data entered by the user in the form of clicking on 31 buttons with the mouse is processed by the applet(s) 6 1 running within Explorer 19, which in turn access the 2 dummy files 17. This action changes time stamp 3 information held within the local filing system of 4 the server computer 5. This information can then be accessed by the main software package by polling and 6 used to activate relays or the like.
7 8 Thus, the video origination computer is linked to the 9 viewing computer via the Internet and the same set of Internet connections is used to transmit low 11 bandwidth data from the viewing computer as user 12 commands. The latter is done by examining time stamp 13 information held on files at the server computer 14 using File Transfer protocol or other commands. The time stamps are changed deliberately by one or more 16 Java applets downloaded to the viewing computer by 17 any web browser when the user accesses the secure web 18 site at the service provider. Accessing files is the 19 only action an applet can perform which is in any way visible to a third computer not directly connected to 21 the viewing computer's Internet "point of presence".
22 23 This arrangement means that the Internet server 24 software does not have to be bespoke in order to achieve the desired results. Also, the web page at 26 the user's computer does not have to refresh every 27 time a remote control command is sent.
28 29 Thus, the invention allows remote viewing and remote 31 storage and replay of event-driven video recordings 7 1 accessible from any computer in the world with a 2 standard Internet connection, without requiring the 3 prior installation of any software or hardware at the 4 viewing computer, and with remote control of a variety of arbitrary parameters at the video 6 origination site, such as camera switching, alarm 7 relays, and pan, tilt and zoom functions. The 8 invention also allows an arrangement in which 9 bandwidth usage on the telecom network is minimised by ensuring that the three computers are only 11 connected when an event occurs and for a programmable 12 or user-selected time thereafter.
