Abstract

A cap-assembly for a drill-screw comprises a cap-member 10 and a washer-member 20. The cap-member 10 has a first portion 11 and a second portion 12. The first portion 11 has an internal configuration 13 to engage the drive of the drill-screw. The second portion 12 consists of a generally annular collar coaxial with the first portion 11 and is further provided with an undercut 14 to receive and retain the washer-member 20 in position. The washer-member is provided with a "stepped" diameter, shown schematically at 21A, 21B and 21C, whereby the washer-member 20 is adapted to "snap-fit" into the annular collar 12.

Description

2357326 CAP ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a cap assembly and in
particular to a cap assembly for use in connection with a drill-screw.
Drill-screws are generally used for fixing materials such as panelling or cladding to the surfaces of a building (e.g. a wall). Drill-screws currently available are provided with an integral cap which is moulded around and/or adhered to the drive-portion of the drill-screw. Although it is possible to remove the cap from the drill-screw, such removal invariably damages the cap beyond repair or re-use and may also damage the drill screw and/or the panelling or cladding.
We have devised a cap assembly which is removable from the drill-screw (and consequently re-usable) without damage to the cap, the drill-screw or any associated panelling or cladding.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a cap assembly adapted to be removably attached to a drill-screw, in which the assembly comprises:
(a) a cap-member adapted to engage the drive-portion of the drill- screw; and (b) a washer-member adapted to co-operate with the cap-member (a) whereby the drive-portion is removably retained between said members (a) and (b).
Preferably, the cap-member (a) comprises a first portion adapted to engage the drive-portion of the drill-screw and a second portion, integral with the first, to receive and removably retain the washer-member (b).
2 In a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the first portion is internally configured so as to engage, in use, the driveportion of the drill-screw and externally configured so as to engage, in use, drive means for rotating the drill-screw (for example, a socket or the chuck of a drill).
Suitably, the said internal configuration may be of triangular, rectangular (e.g. square) or generally hexagonal transverse section, while the external configuration may be provided by means of a plurality of splines or similar keying.
Preferably, the second portion of the cap-member(a) comprises a generally annular collar extending axially from the first portion. More preferably, the second portion is coaxial with the first portion. The second portion may optionally be provided with an undercut to receive and removably retain the washer-member (b).
Suitably, the angle of the undercut is in the range 30 to 70", preferably about 500, relative to the axis of the collar.
Preferably, the washer-member (b) is of generally annular configuration, having a "stepped" diameter whereby in use it can engage and be removably retained within the collar.
Both the cap-member(a) and the washer-member (b) may be made of a mouldable plastics material. A particularly suitable mate rial for this purpose is a polyamide or mixture of polyamides, which can optionally contain one or more reinforcing materials such as glass. A preferred example of a material from which the cap-member (a) and washer member (b) can be made is a glass -reinforced polyamide (e.g. NYLON) 3 in which the ratio of polyamide to glass is in the range 99:1 to 50:50 by weight, preferably 70:30 by weight.
In use, the cap-member (a) is engaged with the outer portion of the drive of the drill-screw, while the washer-member (b) is threaded over the shank of the drill-screw and engaged with the collar of the cap member (a).
Optionally, a further (sealing) washer can be provided with the assembly.
The present invention will be illustrated, merely by way of example, in the following description and with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Registered Trade Mark The single drawing figure is a longitudinal section through a cap assembly according to the present invention.
The cap assembly comprises a cap-member 10 and a washer-member 20.
The cap-member 10 has a first portion 11 to engage the drive of a drill screw (not shown) and a second portion 12 to receive the washer member 20. The first portion 11 has an internal configuration 13 to engage the drive of the drill-screw. The second portion 12 consists of a generally annular collar coaxial with the first portion 11 and is further provided with an undercut 14 to receive and retain the washer-member 20 in position. The washer-member is provided with a "stepped" diameter, shown schematically at 21A, 21B and 21C, whereby the washer member 20 is adapted to "snap-fit" into the annular collar 12.
