Abstract

An ornamental pool comprises a liner 10 which includes a peripheral region 11 bounded by an upstanding peripheral edge 12, a sump 16 and a central pool region 13 for containing a body of water. The peripheral region 11 includes a plurality of sections 14 on which a pebble beach effect is provided either by actual pebbles or a simulated surface, and a plurality of pockets or recesses 15 containing plants. The sump 16 suitably receives a pump for recirculating the contained water.

Description

2356343 ORNAMENTAL POOL The present invention relates to an ornamental
pool.
It has long been recognised that water features can greatly enhance gardens, parks, squares and other open spaces, and, indeed, can be used within buildings as a decorative feature to enhance appearance. Thus, pools of water can appeal to the eye, and, if provided with fountains or waterfalls, also to the ear. However, deep pools may introduce the risk of drowning, especially to children, and moreover stationary water has a tendency to become stagnant and dead.
Pebble pools are known as water features. One such pebble pool, as illustrated in Figure 1, comprises a liner I moulded from a stiff plastics material which includes a substantially horizontal circular section 2, a sump 3 forined at the centre of the circular section 2 and a raised rim 4 at the periphery of the circular section 2. The pebble pool ftirther comprises a sump cover 5 for covering the sump 3 which includes an aperture at its centre through which a spray of water can be pumped from the upstand 6 of an electrical ly-powered pump 7 housed in the water contained in the sump 3. Large pebbles 8, typically up to fist sized pebbles, are laid in a layer on the circular section 2 and the sump cover 5, such that in use water from the spray falls onto the pebbles 8 with the sound of failing water and then runs down into the sump 3 to be re-circulated by the pump 7. Plants and shrubs 9 can surround the liner 1. Whilst the pebbles 8 are constantly wetted, there is no observable standing water on the circular section 2, which arrangement obviates the risk of drowning, but does not provide for reflection.
It is thus an aim of the present invention to provide an improved ornamental pool.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an ornamental pool, comprising a liner including a peripheral region including sections for providing a pebble beach effect and recesses for containing plants, and a central, pool region bounded by the peripheral region for containing a body of water and including a sump for receiving a pump.
2 With this configuration, the pool region of the liner, when containing water, simulates a deep pool without the associated risks of drowning, providing a still surface which will reflect objects above the level of the surface of the water, or, if a fountain or waterfall is provided, can have a rippled surface.
By providing recesses in the peripheral region of the liner, planting pockets are ided for receiving potted plants.
provi C Preferably, at least one of the sections of the peripheral region is arranged such that the pebble beach effect is in part located in contained water and in part located out of contained water.
Preferably, at least one of the sections of the peripheral region slopes outwardly and upwardly.
The pebble beach effect can be real, as provided by discrete pebbles located on the sections of the peripheral region, or simulated.
Preferably, the pool region is arranged such that the depth of water containable thereby does not exceed 15 cm, more preferably 10 cm.
Preferably, the pool further comprises a cover for covering the sump.
Preferably, the liner is a moulded liner. Thus, the present invention provides an ornamental pool which requires minimum maintenance, can be easy to install, can be used to grow water plants, can reflect inter alia the sky, can give the appearance of a shallow pebble pool and provide a visible 30 sheet of water.
3 A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described hereinbelow by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I schematically illustrates a vertical sectional view through a prior art pebble 5 pool;
Figure 2(a) illustrates a plan view of the liner of an ornamental pool in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2(b) illustrates a plan view of the sump cover for the liner of the ornamental pool of Figure 2(a); and Figure 2(c) illustrates a vertical sectional view of the ornamental pool of Figure 2(a).
The ornamental pool comprises a liner 10, in this embodiment moulded from a plastics material, which includes a peripheral region I I bounded by an upstanding peripheral edge 12, and a central, pool region 13 for containing a body of water which can provide reflections and give an impression of depth.
The peripheral region I I includes a plurality of sections 14 on which pebbles are arranged to provide a pebble beach effect, and a plurality of planting pockets 15 for containing plants, particularly marginal plants in pots. In this embodiment the sections 14 slope upwardly and outwardly. In an alternative embodiment the pebble beach effect could be provided by a simulated surface.
The pool region 13 is arranged so as to maintain a maximum depth of water therein, in this embodiment 15cm, and includes a sump 16 for receiving a pump for re-circulating the contained water. In a preferred embodiment the pool region 13 is arranged such as to maintain a water depth of 10 cm.
4 The ornamental pool further comprises a sump cover 17 for covering the sump 16. The sump cover 17 includes an aperture through which a flow of water can be directed. In one embodiment the flow of water can be directed as a fountain. In another embodiment the flow of water can be directed through a passage in an object, for 5 example, a rock.
In a preferred embodiment the liner 10 and the sump cover 17 are moulded from a blank, from which the liner 10 and the sump cover 17 are subsequently cut. In one size the liner 10 can be about I m x 1. 5 in.
Finally, it will be understood that the present invention has been described in its preferred embodiment and can be modified in many different ways without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
