Abstract

A vehicle headrest has a rear surface with a cup holder. In use, the headrest can be removed from its normal position on top of the backrest and attached to another part of the seat with its rear surface uppermost making the cup holder available for use. In the Figure, the headrest is shown attached to the end of a pivotable armrest. It is envisaged that the headrest could also be mounted on other parts of the vehicle.

Description

2355651 ARMREST - HEADREST CUP HOLDER The invention relates to vehicle
seating, and particularly to seating units in which the headrest can be removed completely from the backrest of the seat, and to seating units in which the armrest can be folded from a generally horizontal position of use, into a generally vertical position of use, where it is incorporated in a backrest. (Figure 1) If the headrest provided for the middle passenger using the rear seat of a vehicle can be removed from the normal position, located using escutcheons, into the backrest, a similar location system, typically using escutcheons could be used to locate the headrest at various other positions in the vehicle. The headrest itself contains a device for supporting one or more cups, or other beverage package. The headrest would be removed from the near-vertical backrest, and located into the arrnrest, when in its deployed or near-horizontal position. (Figure 2) The headrest may be inverted, allowing the normal cushioning, used to support the passenger's head, to be locate face downwards into the deployed armrest. The back of the headrest, when considered in its normally near-vertical orientation, could face upwards, and be of a design such that it would support a cup or other typical beverage packageThe headrest, once removed completely from its backrest escutcheons, could be relocated at various potential positions, generally located around the rear-central armrest or seat, in a near-horizontal orientation. (Figure 3) If the headrest is not required, it could be adapted to plug into any other part of the seat structure or vehicle interior.
CLAJMS This invention relates to passenger vehicle seating. It allows the headrest section of a passenger vehicle seating arrangement to incorporate cup holders, or any other typical beverage container, by means of a feature, located within the headrest. The headrest would require removing from its escutcheons, typically located in the passenger seat back support, and rotating through 180 degrees, to allow the cup holding feature to be accessible. The headrest would relocate into similar escutcheons contained within the armrest feature of a typical passenger vehicle seating arrangement, when the armrest were to be deployed into the near-horizontal position. The cup holder feature could then be used to hold beverage containers for use by the vehicle occupants. When the cup holding feature is no longer required, the headrest could be returned through 180 degrees to resemble a head restraint cushion, and secured back into the escutcheons contained within the backrest cushioning of the seating arrangement.
