Abstract

Electrical equipment is contained in a housing 11 having a front panel 14 on which one more connectors 16a and 18a is mounted. Complimentary connectors 16b and 18b attach cables 16c and 18c to the ports on the front panel. The exterior of the panel has one or more flanges 22 having apertures 24 to receive cable ties 26 and formed to serve as handles. The housing is provided with heat dissipating fins 12 and may be mounted on a rack with other units.

Description

2355594 FRONT PANEL FOR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT This invention relates to
electrical equipment.
The background to the invention will be described with reference to a particular application. The reader will readily understand that the invention can find utility an other applications.
Units of electrical, especially electronic, equipment are often used in racks. The units commonly require interconnection to other units in the same or different racks by means of cables. The interconnections may not be standard and in some instances may need to be changed from time to time. For that purpose the racked units may have ports on a front panel, the ports being in the form of connectors mounted on the panel.
Cables having complimentary connectors provide the interconnections. Some equipment dissipates large amounts of heat from heat sinks from which it is desired to keep the cables clear. In any event it is usual for the cables to be fixed by cable ties.
Conventionally, the cable ties are self adhesive or are in the form of Pclips requiring to be screwed to the equipment. Self adhesive ties are not very secure, especially near sources of heat. P-clips are time consuming to fix.
Against this background, in accordance with the invention, there is provided electrical equipment contained by a housing having a front panel on which one ore more connectors is mounted, the exterior of the panel having one or more flanges having apertures to receive cablp ties and formed to serve as handles.
In a most preferred form, the flange(s) are provided with further apertures to define the handles.
The panel is preferably provided with two flanges one on each of two opposed sides.
In the preferred application at least one side of the housing adjacent the panel comprises a heat sink.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a pictorial view of a rack of units of electrical equipment; Figure 2 is a side view of the rack of Figure 1, partly broken away to show the 5 internal construction and the units; Figure 3 is an enlarged pictorial view of one unit from the rack of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a pictorial detail of the front panel of the unit of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, units 2, 4 and 6 of electrical equipment are mounted on a rack 8 in a cabinet 10. In the particular example illustrated the units 2 are antenna coupling equipment, the units 4 are transmitter receivers and the units 6 are power distribution equipment. The transmitter receiver units 4 can dissipate large amounts of heat and to effect cooling housings 11 are provided with horizontally extending extended surfaces or fins 12. Each unit 4 has a front panel 14 through which ports are provided in the form of connectors 16a and 18a are provided. Complimentary connectors 16b and 18b attach cables 16c and 18c to the ports in the front panel.
The fins 12 can become significantly hot and it is desired to keep the cables 16c and 18c clear of them. In any event it is normal to tie or clip cables to a rigid structure rather than to leave them flopping around. To this end the front panel is in the form of a channel section having a base portion 20 and opposed flanges 22. The flanges 22 are each provided with a plurality of apertures 24, to receive cable ties 26, and an aperture 26 which defines a handle 30. Cables 16c and 18c, and any other cables which are required to cross the unit, are tied in the channel provided by the front panel, by cable ties 26, thus being protected from the potentially hot fins 12. The handles 30 are used to lift the unit into its position in the rack where it is secured by fixings through holes 32 in the front panel.
The cabinet 10 provides a plenum chamber 34 behind the racked units 2, 4 and 6. The units 4 are mounted in the rack leaving air passages between them so that air can - 3 be drawn ove the fins 12 into the plenum chamber. To this end, a fan unit 36 is provided in the top of the cabinet to draw air from the plenem chamber 34.
