Abstract
There is described method of manufacturing a concrete kerb which includes locating shuttering 1 to form one or more sides of the kerb and temporarily fixing to the shuttering 1 and extending longitudinally of the shuttering 1, an elongate hollow metal kerb edge member 2 having a hollow section 5 and a depending flange 6 extending the length of the member 2. The kerb edge member 2 may have a pair of depending flanges 6,7 extending the length of the member, the flanges 6,7 being disposed diagonally on opposite sides of the hollow section 5 and extending substantially parallel to one another. Concrete to form the kerb edge is cast to the top of the flange 6.
Description
2355224 KERB EDGE The present invention relates to a kerb angle system for
providing a metal kerb edge to cast concrete kerbs used in civil engineering constructions.
Conventionally, L-shaped mild steel kerb angles have been provided, moulded into the edge of the kerb when the concrete is cast between the shuttering components, the kerb angle being suitably mounted on the shuttering prior to casting.
Such kerb angles can be used along the edges of trenches, service ducts in concrete floors and the like, as well as conventional kerbs, to provide a support ledge or shoulder for a cover and/or a strong mechanical edge to the concrete to prevent damage to it from say vehicle wheels or tyres.
Conventional L-shaped kerb angles are usually manufactured with transverse flanges or tangs welded to the angle for bonding the kerb angle into the concrete once it has been cast. However, welding on such flanges or tangs is time consuming and therefore is often done in situ and such kerb angles provide limited possibilities for securing covers and the like.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a concrete kerb, the method comprising forming a mould by locating shuttering to form one or more sides of the kerb; temporarily fixing to the shuttering, on at least one side of the mould and extending longitudinally of the shuttering, an elongate hollow metal kerb edge member; casting concrete into the mould to fill the mould to the level of the upper edge of the metal kerb edge member; and after the concrete has become self supporting, releasing the hollow metal kerb edge member from the shuttering and removing the shuttering.
The invention also includes an elongate metal kerb edge member for casting in situ into a concrete kerb, the member having a hollow section and a depending flange extending the length of the member. A kerb edge member of this type may include a pair of depending flanges extending the length of the member, the flanges being disposed diagonally on opposite sides of the hollow section and extending substantially parallel to one another. Preferably, the flanges are of different depths.
Use of a kerb of this construction allows a cover or similar to be located in the recess formed at the top edge of the kerb after the shuttering has been removed and to be fixed to the kerb edge member by fixings extending into the hollow section.
The hollow section preferably includes a plurality of holes in one side thereof 1 and a plurality of anchors engageable with the holes to enable the kerb edge member to be permanently secured in the concrete kerb. A plurality of second holes may be formed in an opposite side of the hollow section to the one side, to enable fixing of the member to shuttering.
The invention also includes shuttering comprising a planar member and, temporarily fixed to the planar member, an elongate hollow metal kerb edge member.
Three examples of kerb edges according to the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of shuttering board to which has been attached a first kerb edge member; Figure 2 is a cross-section through the kerb edge member and shuttering board shown in figure 1; Figure 3 is a section through a second kerb edge member, similar to figure 2; and, Figure 4 is a section through a third kerb edge member, similar to the second kerb member of figure 3.
In figure 1 there can be seen a shuttering board 1 forming one side of a mould into which concrete is to be cast to form, say, a concrete kerb or the edge of a concrete platform to which a cover or closure (not shown) is to be fitted. An elongate metal kerb edge member 2, having a cross-section best seen in figure 2, is temporarily fixed to the shuttering board 1.
The kerb edge member 2 is formed from a pair of generally lazy-S sectioned mild steel members 3, 4 which are welded together to provide a hollow section 5 with a pair of depending flanges 6,7, the first flange 6 extending upwardly from the top of the hollowsection 5 and the second flange 7 extending downwardlyfrom thediagonally opposite side of the hollow section. The hollow section 5 has a number of holes 8 disposed along its sides, as is best seen in figure 1, and into these holes can be located securing tangs or tabs 9. By making the holes 8 elongate and forming a recess at the end of each tab or tang 9, the tabs can be presented to the holes and then turned through a right angle to secure them in position.
The f langes 6 and 7 also include smaller holes 10, 11, the lower set of holes (11 as shown in figure 2) being used to secure the kerb edge member 2 to the shuttering board 1 temporarily, by means of nails 12 driven through the holes 11. The metal kerb edge member 2 can be used with either the flange 7 or the flange 6 lowermost depending upon the depth required at the top of the kerb edge.
2 In use, after fixing the kerb edge member 2 to the shuttering, concrete is pouredtoa level 13flush with thetop of theflange 6 sothat, oncethe concrete 15 has set and the shuttering board 1 has been pulled away from the edge of the cast concrete, a recess 14 is provided along the edge of the cast kerb. This allows a cover or the like (not shown) to be located in a position flush with the top of the concrete kerb, platform or the like and, if desired, secured to the kerb edge member 2 by suitable fixings which may, for example, be screwed into holes (not shown) in the top of the kerb edge member 2.
If desired, corner units 16 of the same cross-section may be provided, such a corner unit 16 being shown being presented to a shuttering board corner in figure 1.
The metal kerb edge members may be provided in a number of different standard lengths as desired.
Figure 3 illustrates an alternative form of the elongate kerb edge member 22 which, rather than having a generally recta n g u lar-sectioned hollow section 5 as shown in figures 1 and 2, has a generally trapezoidal hollow section 25 which can provide, in use, a lower angled face 27 for fixing of suitable securing tangs or tabs 29. The kerb edge member 22 may be secured to a shuttering board 21 by, for example, fixing bolts 32. This kerb edge member may be formed from sheet steel suitably roll formed and providing an upper flange 26 from the edges of the bent steel sheet suitably welded together.
Figure 4 illustrates a modification of the kerb edge member 22 shown in figure 3, the kerb edge member 42 of this third example having a similar trapezoidal hollow section 45, but being formed of two angled steel sections 43, 44, welded together along their edges. This third example may facilitate quicker and cheaper manufacture.
