Abstract

A method of sealing and repairing leaks in fuel tanks using corrosion resistant coatings, insulation and filling compounds involves pouring liquid sealant over an area within the tank to be sealed, then sucking the sealant through leak paths in the tank by a portable extractor appliance having a face modified to fit over external surfaces of the tank and comprising a square-section pipe having air holes 8 drilled along its length for connection via three air lines 7 to a vacuum pump.

Description

2354555 THIOKEL EXTRACTOR THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A THIOKEL EXTRACTOR
FOR USE IN VC10 AIRCRAFT FUEL TANK SEALING.
THIOKEL OR PRC SEALANTS, ARE A RANGE OF CORROSION RESISTANT COATINGS, INSULATION AND FILLING COMPOUNDS DESIGNED TO MEET A VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS AND IS USED IN THE AVIATION FIELD TO SEAL AND REPAIR FUEL TANKS.
AT PRESENT, SEALANTS ARE APPLIED BY HAND FROM INSIDE THE AIRCRAFTS'FUEL TANKS OR RIBS AS THEY ARE KNOWN.
THIS INVENTION CIRCUMNAVIGATES THE NEED FOR SERVICE PERSONNEL TO ENTER AN WORK INSIDE THE AIRCRAFT FOR LONG PERIODS IN ALL THE AREAS TO BE SEALED. FURTHERMORE, IT WILL SEAL AREAS OF THE FUEL TANKS THAT ARE INACCESSIBLE TO HANDS.
THE THIOKEL EXTRACTOR IS PORTABLE. THE BASIC DESIGN IS SUCH THAT ITS'SIZE CAN BE MODIFIED TO FIT ALL SIZES OF RIBS FUEL TANKS.
THE EXTRACTOR IS FLAT FACED. IT HAS A SQUARE PIPE WITH AIR HOLES DRILLED ALONG ITS'LENGTH, INSERTED DOWN THE CENTRE AS ILLUSTRATED IN FIG.2.8. TO ENSURE AN EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF SUCTION.
THE EXTRACTOR IS DESIGNED TO BE CONNECTED TO THREE AIR LINES BYWAY OF CONNECTORS AS ILLUSTRATED IN FIG. 1.7. VvrHICH IN TURN, CONNECT TO A VACUUM PUMP.
AS THE SEALANT IS LIQUID IN FORM AND TAKES SEVERAL HOURS TO "CURE", IT IS POURED OVER THE AREA TO BE SEALED, INTERNALLY, WHILST THE EXTRACTOR IS PLACED EXTERNALLY ON THE BODY OF THE PLANE. THE STRENGTH OF SUCTION WILL DRAW THE SEALANT ALONG THE TRACKS OF THE LEAKS IN AREAS THAT ARE INACCESSIBLE TO HANDS.
ONCE THE THIOKEL IS VISIBLE ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE PLANE, THE EXTRACTOR CAN BE MOVED TO THE NEXT AREA TO BE SEALED.

Claims (4)

1. THE THIOKEL EXTRACTOR IS FLAT FACED. IT HAS A SQUARE PIPE WITH AIR HOLES DRILLED ALONG ITS' LENGTH. INSERTED DOWN THE CENTRE TO ENSURE AN EVEN DISTRIBUTION OF SUCTION. THE EXTRACTOR IS DESIGNED TO BE CONNECTED TO THREE AIR LINES, WHICH IN TURN, CONNECT TO A VACUUM PUMP.
2. A THIOKEL EXTRACTOR AS CLAIMED IN CLAIM 1. WHEREIN THE BASIC DESIGN IS SUCH, THAT ITS' SIZE CAN BE MODIFIED TO FIT ALL SIZES OF RIBS / FUEL TANKS ON AIRCRAFT.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows 1. The thiokel extractor is a system which when using an even distribution of suction, will fill all the cavities within the shins of the fuel tank with thiokel, thereby forming a permanent seal throughout the fuel tank structure, thus minimising the need for further maintenance of the fuel tank.
2. The thiokel extractor is flat faced. It has a square pipe with air holes chilled along its' length, inserted down the centre to ensure an even distribution of suction. The extractor is designed to be connected to three air lines, which in turn, connect to a vacuum pump.
3. A thiokel extractor as claimed in claim I wherein the design is such, that its' size can be modified to fit all sizes of ribs/fuel tanks on aircraft.
4. A thiokel extractor substantially as described herein with reference to figures I and 2 of the accompanying drawing.
