Abstract
Decorative paper e.g. wallpaper, is produced as a single elongate sheet with a wide strip side-by-side with a narrow strip, packaged as a roll. The strips may be separated before rolling or separated after purchase by the use of provided perforations or cutting. The wide strip may be wallpaper and the narrow strip a border for that wallpaper. Alternatively, the wide strip may be gift wrapping and the narrow strip simulated ribbon to tie around a wrapped article.
Description
2-354486 Improvements relating to Decorative Paper This invention relates
to decorative paper. it Will be described in relation to wallpaper, but it does have other applications, such as gift wrap.
For some rooms, it is appropriate to paper from the ceiling down to the skirting board. However for others, particularly very high-ceilinged rooms, a better effect can be obtained by starting the "drop" from a horizontal line some way below the ceiling. What is above the line may be painted to match the ceiling, or it may be covered by a different paper.. Some rooms have a picture rail to define such a line, but when there is no such rail, it is customary to provide a neat finish or border by adhering a decorative strip all round the room over the upper boundary of the paper.
When one buys wallpaper there is usually available a selection of borders or a sample book from which one can order a co-ordinating paper border. These borders are manufactured, rolled up, labelled, distributed and sold in separate packages. Apart from the difference in actual material costs, which are not high in any event, most of these operatio ns are the same whether the roll is one metre wide or just two or three centimetres wide. The result is that the decorative borders are almost as expensive per unit length as the wallpaper itself.
The aim of this invention is to provide a simpler and cheaper way of making such strips available.
2 According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided decorative paper including a wide strip and a narrow strip rolled and packaged together to be presented co-axially side-by-side.
For wallpaper, the wide strip is the paper that provides the main wall covering while the narrow one is the decorative strip referred to above which forms a neat, co ordinated border.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of producing decorative paper, the method comprising printing a length of paper with first and second decorative patterns along respectively wide and narrow bands thereof, forming a roll of the length of paper with at least the facility for separating the bands into strips, and packaging the roll.
The strips will be printed and converted (i.e. rolled and packaged) simultaneously as one piece. They may remain as one when converted leaving it to the end user to separate them. To assist this there may be a scissor line printed on the reverse of the paper, or there may be a line of perforations. However, it is difficult to cut absolutely straight over a considerable length, even with a clear guideline, and if the narrow strip is parted from the main body of the paper by tearing along a line of weakness (such as provided by perforations) slightly ragged edges are left on both parts. These can be trimmed of course, but again great skill is needed to keep straight.
Therefore it will probably be preferred to slit the 3 paper as it is being wound into the final roll ready f or sale.
The paper can be wound on a tubular core, it can be coreless, or it can wound on an insert, namely a sheet somewhat stiffer than the paper and rolled in with the paper over the first few turns.
The packaging will preferably be at least partially transparent so that parts of both wide and narrow strips will be visible to a prospective purchaser.
other uses for such decorative paper include gift wrapping, where the wide strip is used to wrap the gift and the narrow strip used as decorative curled ribbon or bow.
It has been assumed above that just one border strip will be provided on each roll. It would of course be possible to provide such a strip along each edge, to give the user a choice of two different borders, both co-ordinated with the main part of the paper.
