Abstract
A portable holder for a utensil such as a bottle or glass comprises a support means adapted to cradle the utensil and anchoring means adapted to penetrate a medium such as the ground. The support means may be an open or closed ring, a spiral or a cage and may be made of metal such as stainless steel or of plastics. The anchoring means may be one or more spikes which may be provided with a screw thread or corkscrew spiral. The support means and anchoring means may be formed integrally with one another.
Description
1 2354155 Case No: P. 100 1 Inventor: MICHAEL PETER RYAN
DESCRIPTION
UTENSIL HOLDER E. A. FENWICK & Co., 5 Stonehouse Road, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands, B73 6LR.
2 This invention relates to a utensil holder, which is readily portable and simple to manufacture.
It is already known to have cup or can holders in cars, for example in the lid of a glove compartment or in passenger doors. These holders are usually in the form of cylindrical mouldings into which the utensil slots or slits. However, they are components of the car, not portable.
Also known are metal stands designed to hold a wine bottle and glasses. Whilst these are portable, they are rather bulky and would not easily be transported.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple to manufacture, portable construction for preventing spillage from a utensil such as a bottle or glass, provided with anchoring means rendering it particularly suitable for outdoor use for example on a lawn/field or beach.
According to the invention. a portable utensil holder comprises a support means adapted to cradle a utensil and provided with anchoring means adapted to penetrate a penetrable medium.
The support means may be for example an open or closed loop, a spiral or cage. Integral or attached to the support means is an anchoring means for example a single spike or an assembly of two or more spikes. The support means may be provided with a screw thread or corkscrew spiral to give a more secure attachment to a penetrable medium.
3 The utensil holder is suitably of a rigid material preferably metal such as stainless steel which is tough, non-corrosive and hygienic but may also be of other rigid materials such as plastics.
The utensil holder preferably is proportioned so that the ratio of the length of the anchoring means to the diameter of the support means (or largest dimensions where the support means is not circular in section) is between 2:1 and 6: 1, more preferably between 3:1 and 5: 1. A typical overall length for the utensil holder is preferably between 25 and 35 centimetres.
In its simplest form a utensil holder according to one embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figure 1. This comprises a support means consisting of an open loop integral with a single spike as anchoring means. In use, the spike can be stuck into the ground sufficiently far to achieve stability and then the utensil to be supported can be slotted into the loop. The utensil may be, for example, a bottle, wine glass, beer glass or decanter. It is thus particularly useful for outdoor use such as for picnics or barbecues either on an earth based medium such as a lawn or on a beach. By using the utensil holder, the utensil is much less likely to be knocked over.
