Abstract

An adhesive substrate, for example an adhesive tape or an adhesive sticker, comprising a substrate of plastics or other material in sheet form, coated on its back surface with an adhesive which incorporates a composition or agent for giving off a pleasing scent. The substrate may be in the form of a tape which may wound into a roll and dispensed when required. There may be a backing strip over the adhesive coating. The scent may be contained in micro capsules. The tape may be used in gift wrapping.

Description

1 2353484 Adhesive substrates The present invention relates to adhesive
tape or other adhesive substrates.
Adhesive tape has long been known, comprising a strip of plastics or other material having a coating of adhesive on its back surface, the strip being wound into a roll, from which a length of the tape can be dispensed when required: the backing coating of adhesive allows the dispensed length of tape to be adhered to an article upon contact.
Such adhesive tape is used in a very wide variety of applications, for example to seal an envelope or package, or join sheets of paper together. Adhesive tape has been supplied in a wide variety of sizes and colours, and often with patterns, to enhance an envelope or package (such as a gift package) to which it is applied. Thus adhesive tape is commonly used to serve a decorative function, in addition to or instead of a sealing function.
I have now devised an adhesive tape which may be used to further enhance the attractiveness of a package or other article to which it is applied: my invention is also applicable to other adhesive substrates, such as patches, stickers or labels.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an adhesive substrate which comprises a substrate of plastics or other material in sheet form, coated on its back surface with an adhesive which incorporates a composition or agent for giving off a pleasing scent.
It will be appreciated that, in use, the adhesive tape or other substrate gives off a pleasing perfume or fragrance which adds to the attractiveness of the article to which it is applied, for example an envelope or gift package.
The adhesive substrate may be in the f orm of a tape, wound into a coil and from which a length of the tape may be dispensed when required. Instead, the adhesive substrate may be in the form of patches, labels or stickers, for example.
In the case of the adhesive tape, this pay be wound in conventional manner, such that each turn of the coil is in 2 direct contact with the underlying turn: instead, the tape may have a backing strip (e.g. of paper) over its adhesive-coated back surface, which backing strip is peeled away from the dispensed- length of tape, before this is applied to the desired 5 article.
In the case of patches, stickers or labels, preferably these are supplied with a backing piece (e.g. of paper) over the adhesive-coated back surfaces, the backing piece being peeled away before the patch, sticker or label is applied to the desired article.
In all cases, preferably the adhesive is a shelfadhesive or contact adhesive, such that the tape or other substrate becomes adhered to the surface, to which it is applied, upon contact, subject to moderate pressure, e.g.
finger-pressure.
The composition or agent which gives off the pleasing scent is incorporated into the adhesive composition which is coated onto the back surface of the tape or other substrate. The scent-giving composition or agent may be arranged so that the scent is retained or locked in until the tape or other article is applied to its intended surface: for example, the scent may become released upon moderate pressure being applied to the tape or other substrate, as it is applied to its intended surface. In particular, the scent-giving composition or agent may be provided in the form of microcapsules which break or rupture under moderate pressure, to release the locked-in perfume or fragrance.
The adhesive tape or other substrate may be made in a variety of different colours and, optionally, a variety of different patterns. Also, the tape or other substrate may be supplied with a variety of different scents.
In any event, it will be appreciated that the proposed adhesive tape or other substrate can be used to greatly enhance the attractiveness of the article to which it is applied: the incorporation of the scent-giving composition or agent into the adhesive coating does not substantially increase the cost of the product.

Claims
1) An adhesive substrate which comprises a substrate of plastics or other material in sheet form, coated on its back surface with an adhesive which incorporates a composition or 5 agent for giving off a pleasing scent.
2) An adhesive substrate as claimed in claim 1, in the form of a tape wound into a coil and from which a length of said tape may be dispensed when required.
3) An adhesive substrate as claimed in claim 2, in which said tape is wound such that each turn of said coil is in contact with the underlying turn.
4) An adhesive substrate as claimed in claim 2, in which said tape is provided with a backing strip over its adhesive coated surface.
5) An adhesive substrate as claimed in claim 1, in the form of a patch, label or sticker.
6) An adhesive substrate as claimed in claim 5, provided with a backing piece over its adhesive-coated surface.
7) An adhesive substrate as claimed in any preceding claim, in which said adhesive comprises a self-adhesive or contact adhesive.
8) An adhesive substrate as claimed in any preceding claim, in which said scent-giving composition or agent is such that the scent is retained against release until the substrate is adhered to a surface.
4 9) An adhesive substrate substantially as herein described.
