Description

2352492 DEVICE FOR FIXING A BAFFLE TO AN ENGINE The present invention
relates to a device for fixing a baffle to an engine and more particularly to the top part of such an engine. It finds its application in particular in the field of acoustic baffles, but also in that of baffles of the type known as "structure covers".
Such acoustic baffles are known, which are fixed to the top part of engines to reduce noise, in particular in the case of direct-injection diesel engines. However, such baffles can also be used on other engines, for example on petrol engines, or even on electric motors.
These acoustic baffles are mainly used on light motor vehicles, but can also be used on heavy goods vehicles or agricultural tractors, or even on motors not intended for vehicles.
The known acoustic baffles are fixed to the top of the engine so as to prevent the upward propagation of noise. However, because the baffles are fixed to the engine, they are subject to the engine's vibrations. It is thus essential that the means for fixing the baffle to the engine should insulate the vibrations so that the baffle is not itself a source of noise.
The largest engine vibrations are those which correspond to the second-order component of the rotation of the engine (harmonic 2). These critical frequencies thus range from about 25 Hertz for an engine idling at 750 rpm, to 200 Hertz for a speed of 6000 rpm. It is thus important that the devices for fixing the acoustic baffle to the engine should have intrinsic frequencies of less than 25 Hertz and preferably less than 20 Hertz.
The present invention is directed towards providing such devices.
More particularly, the present invention is directed towards providing a device for fixing a baffle to an engine which allows optimized uncoupling and which is simple and inexpensive to manufacture.
The present invention is also directed towards providing an assembly for fixing a baffle comprising 5 such a device.
To this end, a subject of the invention is firstly a device for fixing a baffle to the top part of an engine, characterized in that it comprises a receiving head forming a housing to receive the head of a mounting rod attached to the engine, a base comprising means for receiving the said baffle and a bellows between the said receiving head and the said base, the said device being made of an elastic synthetic material.
In one particular embodiment, the said head forms one wall of the said housing, the said wall defining a first aperture connecting the said housing with one end of the interior of the said bellows, the other end of the interior of the said bellows comprising a second aperture connecting the interior of the said bellows with the exterior at the said base.
More particularly, the said wall can form, at the said first aperture, a collar capable of retaining a complementary collar of the said head of the mounting rod.
Also in one particular embodiment, the said bellows is formed from two cone frustums placed together via their large base.
The said head can also comprise a limit stop at its exterior to engage with the said baffle.
The said means for receiving the said baffle can also comprise a circular groove made in the said base and arranged to receive the edge of an aperture provided in the said baffle.
The said base can form a cone frustum flared from the said second aperture.
The subject of the invention is also an assembly f or f ixing a baf f le to the top part of an engine, characterized in that it comprises a mounting rod attached tb the said engine, f ixing means attached to the said baf f le and a device as described above. More particularly, the head of the said rod for this fixing assembly can be of enlarged diameter. 5 The abovementioned fixing means can include a caliper mounted a certain distance below the said baffle. More particularly, the said caliper can include an aperture having an edge arranged to engage with the said base of the said device.
More particularly, the said aperture can have a slot for introducing the said base.
It will be understood that the device according to the invention and the assembly comprising it can be produced simply and that no complex operation is involved in assembling them. In addition, the fixing assembly is located entirely under the baffle which hides it from view. It therefore does not detract from the aesthetic appearance of the engine. 20 one particular embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the attached diagrammatic drawings, in which: - Figure I is a side view of a f ixing device according to the invention; - Figure 2 is a bottom view of a caliper for mounting an acoustic baffle; - Figure 3 is a view in cross section along the line III-III of Figure 2; - Figure 4 is a side view of a fixing rod which can engage with the device according to the invention; and - Figure 5 is a view in axial cross section of a fixing assembly according to the invention.
The device in Figure 1 generally comprises a receiving head 1, a connecting bellows 2 and a base 3.
The receiving head 1 is formed from a wall 4 defining a housing 5. The wall 4 is narrowed at the bottom to form a collar 6 facing upwards and partially closing off an aperture 7 connecting the interior of the housing 5 with the interior 8 of the bellows 2.
The receiving head I also has a limit stop I at the top which is designed to dampen the contact between the device and the acoustic baffle when the bellows 2 is flattened.
The bellows 2 consists of two cone frustums 9 and 10 placed together via their large bases.
The small base of the upper cone frustum 9 faces upwards and constitutes the connection with the aperture 7 of the housing 5. The small base of the lower cone frustum 10 faces downwards and forms an aperture 11 connecting the interior 8 of the bellows 2 with the exterior. 15 The base 3 forms two circular external flanges, perpendicular to the axis of the device, i.e. a flange 12 at the aperture 11 and a bottom f lange 13 below the f lange 12. The two f langes 12 and 13 together f orm a circular groove 14. 20 The base 3 moreover forms a cone frustum 15 flared towards the bottom and outwards to facilitate the introduction of the fixing rod which will be described below. The device which has just been described is arranged to make the connection between the top part of an engine (not shown) and an acoustic baffle 16.
This baffle can be one-piece moulded with fixing means 17 arranged to receive the abovementioned device.
In the present case, the fixing means 17 comprise two walls 18 substantially perpendicular to the baffle 16, and a wall 19 connected to the walls 18 at a certain distance from the baffle 16 and substantially parallel to this baffle. The thickness of the wall 19 is substantially equal to the distance between the flanges 12 and 13.
The wall 19 has a central aperture 20 connecting with one edge of the wall via a slot 21.
A rod 22 is mounted by any suitable means attached to the top of the engine with which the acoustic baffle 16 is combined. The top of the rod 22 has a head 23 whose diameter is larger than that of the rod, thus forming between this head and the rod 22 a collar 24 facing downwards.
The acoustic baffle 16 is thus mounted on the engine in the following way.
Firstly, a plurality of mounting devices, such as that of Figure 1, are installed under the acoustic baffle 16. To this end, their base is compressed so that the circular groove 13 can be introduced into the slot 21 and so that the edge of the aperture 20 sits in the circular groove 14. 15 The baffle fitted with these connecting devices is then placed over the engine, on which are mounted rods 22 corresponding in number and position to the connecting devices. The baffle 16 is then lowered so as to engage 20 the heads 23 of the rods 22 in the housings 5 through the interior 8 of the bellows 2. The cones 15 of the bases 3 allow the baffle 16 to be centred easily. A person skilled in the art will know how to size the various parts of the device according to the invention, and in particular the connecting bellows 2, and how to select a material of suitable rigidity to produce this device, so as to obtain the desired intrinsic frequency which, generally, will have to be below a predetermined value.
