Circulating or passing liquids through materials on perforated tubes or drums.-Apparatus for dyeing material wound on bobbins, particularly carded wool, is arranged so that the liquid withdrawn by a pump from a vessel freely open to the air, is forced under constant pressure radially through the material on the bobbins either from the periphery to the centre or vice versa as desired, and finally returned to the vessel. The apparatus is particularly suitable for dyeing with boiling liquids. In the plant shown, the open vat 1 contains the liquid which is heated by a steam coil 1<1>; the vat is provided with a false bottom 3 on which is mounted four closed containers 5 having removable covers 12 and fitted internally with perforated tubes to receive the bobbins; the tubes are provided at the lower ends with plates 7<1> and with conical sockets 7 to engage corresponding conections 8 on the base of the vat 1, and the upper ends of the tubes are fitted with solid portions 11 having sunken racks 11' to co-operate with pawls 10 carried by plates 9 which are passed over the tubes and serve to hold the bobbins in a compressed condition. Associated with the vat - are a pump p and a control valve 14 connected together and to the vat by suitable pipe connections ; the body of the valve is provided with through passages 23, 26 and with ports 24, 25, 27, 28. The pump runs continuously in one direction and draws liquid from the vat through pipes 22; liquid is delivered to the valve 14 and in one position passes through the ports 25, 24 to the pipe 18<1> into the compartment 4 of the vat, then into the closed containers 5, radially through the material into the tubes 6, finally escaping through the connections 8, pipe 20<1> and passage 23 in the valve, to the return pipe 19<1> to the vat; on rotating the valve body through 90‹, as by the hand-wheel 16', the liquid flows through the ports 27, 28 to the pipe 20<1> and connections, then through the perforated tubes. and after passing through the material, being collected by the containers 5 and passed to the valve through the pipe 18', and then guided bv the passage 26 in the valve to the pipe 19<1> leading to the vat.
