Abstract

The invention describes a Direction Sensitive Warning Panel for hazard warning or general announcements. The invention is direction sensitive, having incorporated within the panel an infrared dual element pyoelectric device using a slot or freznal lens to focus the moving infrared source. The invention allows for customer programming of direction and output types, being that of stored message or warning tones in the required direction via switches or links. The invention incorporates an additional sensor fixed to the front panel, being that of a mechanical switch or electronic sensor for the manual replaying of the stored message. The panel would be installed at the top of a flight of stairs, and issue a warning to people approaching the stairs but not to people coming upstairs.

Description

2352106 Direction Sensitive Warning Panel.
The Invention relates to a Direction sensitive warning panel.
The invention is designed as an aid to the Blind / visually impaired. The main feature of this invention is that of Direction sensing, so that the invention can be placed i.e. at the top of stairs or other hazardous areas and be able to distinguish if the person is walking away from a hazard (no warning need be given), or walking towards a hazard (the warning and details can then be announced).
The invention has the ability to produce warning tones, so that if needed the invention can produce warning tones instead of stored speech in the direction required, or replay the stored message in one direction and tones in the other.
The invention also has a feature of a switched front panel (being either mechanical or electronic i.e. touch panel) allowing the person to replay the stored message, which could be required in the event of the invention being set to warning tone only.
The invention can also be used as a general warning panel / announcer requiring direction sensing.
References to the Drawings are as follows Figure I Shows in perspective an example layout of the direction sensitive warning panel.
Figure 2 Shows in the form of a block schematic, the various function blocks within the invention.
1. The invention is in the form of a panel for mounting onto any rigid surface, e.g. being that of a wall. The invention incorporates an infrared direction sensor being that of a 'Dual-element pyro-electric device'with the infrared source i.e. human body, being focused through a 5. slot(s) within an infrared opaque housing or infrared transmissive freznal lens consisting of one or more lens elements. As the infrared source moves from one point to another in either of the directions shown (Fig I numbered 4), the resulting infrared source is focused in turn onto each of the elements within the 'Dual-element pyro-electric device'. The elements within the 'Pyro-electric device' are polarity opposed, producing negative and 10. positive outputs respectively. The output can then be amplified and processed using the processing element to determine direction. Manual activation of the stored speech is achieved by the operation a switch / electronic sensor assembly situated to the front of the invention (Fig I numbered 1/). The processing element (fig 2 numbered 30 consists of discrete devices, or that of a 15. Microprocessor. The processing element accepts input signals from the input sensors (direction sensor touch panel or switch assembly) and produces the required output responses dependant on the operational configuration of the invention. The outputs of the processing element are used to access the various inputs / outputs on the speech storage device, the 20. processing unit is also used to generate the warning tones etc. The operational configuration is attained by the customer / installer through the setting of switches or links situated within the invention (fig 2 numbered 4/), enabling the activation of the invention by sensed Left / Right movement or both and warning tones or stored speech as required. 25. The resultant speech or tones are then passed to an amplifier (Fig 2 numbered 6/) to be amplified to a sufficient level to drive the output speaker (Fig 2 numbered 7. Recording of the speech storage device is attained by the customer / installer through the the operation of an internal configuration switch / link.
