Abstract

A vehicle rear torsion beam has a leaf spring beneath each longitudinal member (10), with each end connected to the vehicle body (20) and its centre connected to the rear end of the longitudinal member (10). Dampers (40) are connected to the rear ends of the longitudinal members (10), to the rear of the wheel centre. The resulting structure is compact and results in low loads into the body (20).

Description

2351050 Vehicle Suspensions The present invention relates to vehicle rear
suspensions and in particular to torsion beam rear suspensions.
Torsion beam rear suspensions generally comprise two longitudinal members each being pivotably mounted at its front end to a sprung part of the vehicle and having a wheel mounted on its rear end, the longitudinal members being substantially parallel and lying in a common plane, and a transverse torsion beam having each of its two ends connected to a respective one of the longitudinal members between its front and rear ends.
The springing of such suspensions is generally provided by means of substantially vertical coil springs acting between the longitudinal members and the body. The present invention aims to provide a more compact arrangement of torsion beam suspension.
The present invention therefore provides a vehicle rear suspension comprising two longitudinal members each being pivotably mounted at its front end to a sprung part of the vehicle and having a wheel mounted on its rear end, and a transverse torsion beam having each of its two ends connected to a respective one of the longitudinal members between its front and rear ends to form a frame, and a pair of leaf springs each acting between a respective side of the frame and the sprung part of the vehicle to control vertical movement of the wheels relative to the sprung part.
Preferably each leaf spring has one end connected to the sprung part and the other end connected to one of the frame and the sprung part, and a 5 point between the two ends connected to the frame.
Preferably said point on each spring is connected to the frame at the rear end of a respective one of the longitudinal members.
Preferably the system further comprises a pair of dampers each connected between the rear end of one of the longitudinal members and the sprung part. The dampers are preferably connected to the longitudinal members to the rear of the respective wheel centre. This means that the damper travel is greater than the vertical wheel travel relative to the body.
Preferred embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of a torsion beam suspension according to the invention, Figure 2 is a transverse section through part of the suspension of Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a schematic side view of a torsion beam suspension according to a second embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, a torsion beam suspension comprises two longitudinal members 10 each being pivotably mounted by means of a resilient bush 14 at its front end 16 to a respective bracket 18 which in turn is rigidly mounted on a sprung part of the vehicle, in this case the body 20.
Each longitudinal member also has a wheel 22 mounted on its rear end 24.
The longitudinal members 10 are substantially parallel and he in a common plane, and are joined by a transverse torsion beam 26 having each of its two ends connected to a respective one of the longitudinal members 10 at a point between its front and rear ends 16, 24, so as to form an H shaped frame.
The left hand side of the system, as shown in Figure 2 will now be described, the right hand side being equivalent. A leaf spring 28 extends parallel to the longitudinal member 10 and is located beneath it, having its front end pivotably mounted on the bracket by means of a bush 30 just beneath the bush 14 at the front end of the longitudinal member 10. Its rear end is mounted to the vehicle body 20 by means of a shackle 32 at a point substantially to the rear of the wheel centre X. The centre 34 of the leaf spring 28 is connected, via a resilient pad 36 to a bracket 38 mounted on the rear end of the longitudinal member 10 near to the wheel centre X. A damper 40 has its lower end pivotably connected to the bracket 38 at a point 42 and its upper end pivotably connected to the rear end of the bracket 18.
The damper mounting point 42 on the bracket 18 is to the rear of the wheel centre and below the leaf spring 28.
The bushes 30 at the front ends of the leaf springs 28, the shackles 32 at their rear ends, and the pad 36 between the bracket 38 and the leaf springs are all arranged so as to allow a degree of lateral movement of the leaf spring relative to the body 20 and relative to the longitudinal members 10. This allows the frame 10, 26 to twist in conventional manner so as to provide a degree of steering under cornering conditions.
As can be seen best in Figure 2, the bracket 18, which defines the uppermost point of the suspension system, is mounted on the body 20 just inboard of the wheel arch at a level just below the floor 44 of the boot space. Therefore, because the vertical coil springs of conventional torsion beam arrangements are not present, the volume that they normally occupy, the area A shown in Figure 2, can be used as extra boot space. A further advantage of the use of leaf springs is that the load on the body is spread between the front and rear ends of the leaf springs and the tops of the dampers. This means that the body does not experience such concentrated loads as those at the top of the strut of a conventional torsion beam suspension.
During assembly the frame 10, 26, leaf springs 28, and the two pairs of brackets 18, 38 can be pre-assembled and then fitted to the vehicle body as a sub-assembly by attaching the brackets 18 and the rear ends of the leaf springs 28 to the body 20.
Referring to Figure 3, in a second embodiment of the invention, the frame 50, wheels 52 and body 54 are connected together in substantially the same way as the first embodiment. However the leaf springs 56 are further forwards than in the first embodiment, each having a rear end 58 connected to the frame 50 at the rear end of a respective one of the longitudinal members 60, and a front end 62 connected to the body 54 forward of the Hframe mounting points 64 in the area of the vehicle door sills. The centre points of the leaf springs 56 are connected to the body, or the frame, in the area of the H-frame mounting points. This enables the system to be used in a vehicle where the wheels are mounted very near the rear, or where there is very little space at the rear for other reasons.
