Abstract
234,911. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., Gouldbourn, J., and Goddard, J. W., (United Shoe Machinery Corporation [partly]). March 8, 1924. Cutting out lining panels; trimming.-Relates to machines for trimming upper material of a bottomed shoe, of the kind in which a support carrying a knife or an upper supporting member. or both, is so dimensioned that it can enter well into the shoe; and consists in machines adapted to cut out panels of lining material which have been left to support "bar" or "cut out" uppers. A rotatable mounting is provided for the knife or the support, so that the support does not impede the trimming of curved portions of the work; and two co-operating cutting members are provided, such as a knife and anvil, one inside and the other outside the shoe. A vibrating pointed knife may be used. Fig. 1 shows a machine with a reciprocating rotatable knife 4, mounted in a sleeve 7 carried by a middle sleeve 12 which can slide but not rotate in an outer sleeve 13 capable of a part rotation in a bearing at the end of an arm 3 adapted to enter well into the top portion of a bottomed shoe. The knife is reciprocated by a block 19 on a crank on a driven shaft 21, dirt being excluded by a rotatable guide in an adjustable cap 18 which forms the support for the upper. The knife co-operates with an anvil 5 having lips 61, Fig. 3, which enter between the upper and lining and constitute a gauge. The anvil is carried by a stem 29, Fig. 1, adjustable vertically and normally depressed by a spring 37. The anvil is raised, to permit insertion of work, by a treadleactuated lever 40. For cutting curved portions of the work, or as necessary, the anvil and knife may be simultaneously swung through an angle by a handle 55 on a spindle 47 carrying two pulleys 45, 48 which are connected to pulleys 42 on the anvil mounting and the sleeve 13, respectively, by steel bands pinned to the rotatable members. The bands are tensioned by pointed screws 53. When a seam is encountered the upper support 17, 18 descends against the pressure of a spring 16. Fig. 4 shows a modified machine wherein the support 78 entering the shoe is rotatable, it being carried on ball bearings 158. The support carries a shear ring 68, Fig. 5, co-operating with a knife 62 having a point and a cutting edge 66. The knife is reciprocated by an arm 96 normally latched to an arm 100 oscillated by a crank 106. To guide the knife and support waste material, a spring plunger 162, Fig. 5, is mounted in the ring 68. A knife guard and gauge 70, Fig. 7, has a rounded surface 74 and lip 72 engaging the upper, and a flange 76 to protect the operator's fingers. To permit insertion of work, a treadle raises a plunger 124, Fig. 4, which first frees the latch and then raises the arm 96 by a pin 126. A screw 84 on the knife-carrying bar engages a stop 138 and raises the gauge with the knife. To slightly raise the gauge 70 when a seam is encountered a knee lever working between adjustable limits raises an arm 146 on the gauge-carry. ing rod.
