Abstract

Slates 5 have rivetted thereto a clip 2 which clips onto a fixing rail 1 as shown. The fixing rail 1 may be screwed at 4 to an existing batten 6, or for the construction of new roofs a unitary fixing rail 1a (Drawing 4, not shown) may replace the batten/ strip combination 6, 1.

Description

TITLE : A NEW SLATING SYSTEM FOR RAPID AND ACCURATE FASTENING OF SLATES ON NEW AND EXISTING ROOFS FIELD : This invention relates to a new and rapid method for constructing new slate roofs using clips and rails and also for completely re-slating of existing roofs using clips and strips, without the use of nails.
DESCRIPTION : Earlier systems of fixing slates were timeconsuming and often incurred breakages caused by hammering in the nails. Once nailed in place, a slate could not be adjusted. With the new system there is no hammering, the slates, natural or man-made, are just clicked into place and slid along the rail or strip to butt against the next one. Once the rails or strips are screwed into place, a whole roof can be laid continuously in a short period of time.
The new Click-fix slating system uses clips and rails or strips. For new roofs, the Universal clips (item 2 in Drawing 2) are fixed to the slates and clicked home on to rails which are screwed to the rafters or boards. For roofs with timber battens, new or existing, the Universal clips are fixed to the slates and clicked home to the strip screwed to the timber battens. If subsequently it is required to replace broken slates, one can easily remove one slate with a slate hook and insert the replacement slate complete with its Universal clip. This system can be used both on sloping roofs and vertical walls.

Claims (5)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. The new slating system is a method for the rapid and accurate laying of slates, in which slates fitted with clips click into a rail or strip, without the use of hammer or nails.
  2. 2. The system is suitable for use on sloping roofs and vertical walls and with different sizes of slates.
  3. 3. The clip grips the slate with its raised projections, which prevents slipping and rotation.
  4. 4. The system can be used with all kinds of natural and man-made slates.
  5. 5. This system provides a stronger and more secure fixing for slates than conventional nailing.
