234,870. Leon, K. O. Feb. 8, 1924. Illuminating, means for.-A clock mechanism has its characteristic function of showing time periodically interrupted to show advertisemants. A grandfather clock is described in which by optical projection, with the aid of mirrors 24, 25, an advertisement and a shadow of clock hands &c. are in turn shown on a screen b of translucent glass &c. The advertisements may be carried by a disc or a band c, preferably endless, certain links of which, e.g. every third, are blank. The band c passes over a hexagonal roller c driven intermittently from a chain o through Geneva stop mechanism l, k, h so as to position each link in turn in the light beam. The band c is steadied by a slotted guideway 45, preferably of staggered formation. Each advertising transparency is removably held in the band links which are of metal with an opening 39, Fig. 8, the transparency being slipped under flanges 43 and positioned between rides 44. The hands of the clock t, Fig. 2, are mounted at right angles to an extension 11, and may be adapted to be swung into the light beam at the intervals when the blank links are in place. This is effected by pivoting the clock t at u and controlling its gravitational or spring-influenced tendency to raise the hands into display position by a cam p on the shaft g of the roller e. The clock numerals may be marked on the blank transparency of the band on the screen b, or on a ring around the hands. This ring and the hands only are brought into focus, the necessary supporting framework and gear wheels being not reflected. To secure accurate focusing the clock trunnions u have pins which engage oblique slots in their bearings and move the clock laterally to bring the hands when displayed into the plane of the band. In modified forms the clock is stationary and a mirror may be swung into position to reflect the clock hands, illuminated by a second mirror, through the objective. Or the objective and the mirror 24 together, or a single mirror, may be pivoted to transmit light from the band and from the clock in succession. Or the band c may travel horizontally, and each blank link be provided with a mirror arranged to reflect the clock, the remaining links being preferably shielded by an overhanging flange. The spaces between mirrors and lenses may be enclosed by casings. An audible signal may be given and the source of light may be extinguished or masked during each change.
