Abstract

234,685. Groves, W. W., (Timken Roller Bearing Co.). Sept. 12, 1924. Rollers, treating: bevelling.-A machine for grinding bevelled surfaces on the ends of rollers for roller bearings comprises an oscillating grinding-wheel disposed obliquely to the axis of a roller and adapted to grind a roller on each swing, the rollers being carried by an intermittently rotating carrier which moves to bring a new roller into position after one has been ground; means also are provided for ejecting ground rollers and for automatically moving the grinding wheel to compensate for wear. The machine comprises a base 1 carrying a housing 2 in which is mounted a rotatable head 3 carrying spindles for rotating the rollers, and on the housing is mounted a hopper 7 to hold a supply of rollers; the housing also carries a bracket 8 supporting mechanism for operating the grinding-wheel 9. The bottom of the hopper has a tapered groove 21 in which the rollers lie and along which they are moved by a frictionallv driven disc 15 to come over an outlet 34 opening into a tube 35. The disc 15 is driven, through gearing 22, 23, by a ratchet 25 and a pawl 26 operated from the main shaft 10. The lower end of the tube is above a slidable plunger 37, in which is a hole 39 which receives a roller from the tube, movement of the plunger carrying the roller over a passageway 40, from which it enters one of the hollow spindles 42 of the head 3, being pushed into place by a finger 46. The head carries four spindles 42, and within each spindle is mounted a hollow piston 51 having a conically bored outer end to receive a roller 4. The pistons have flanges 52<c> to prevent entry of dust between the piston and the spindle. Split rings 53 make the piston a friction fit in the spindle. In the bore of each piston is a plunger 54 which acts to eject a roller and to move the piston to receive a new roller; the plungers are moved by an arm 64 carried by a sleeve 60 which is rocked by a cam 57, and on the sleeve is also an arm 62 which operates the roller feeding plunger 37. The head 3 is mounted on a shaft 50 and is turned at intervals by a pin 69 on a. gear wheel 78 and a star wheel 65 on the shaft. The spindles are driven, as they arrive at the working position, by a belt 75. The bracket 8 is pivotally mounted on a stud on the housing 2 and may be fixed in any desired angular position therein. In bearings 82 on the bracket is a hollow shaft 83, and within the shaft is a screwed spindle 86 engaging a screwed lug 90 on a hanger 84. The spindle 86 has on one end a ratchet wheel 87 which may be engaged by a pawl 116. The hanger carries at its lower end a shaft 92, Fig. 11, having thereon the grinding- wheel 9, and the shaft is driven by a, rope 101 the tension of which is adjusted by a pulley 100. The hanger is rocked by a rod 110, 111 and an eccentric 109. The pawl 116 is normally held out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 87 by the weight of an arm 117 on the pawl, so that as the hanger oscillates, the screw 86 oscillates with the shaft 83 and no axial movement of the lug 90 and the hanger is produced; the arm 117 may however, be attracted by an electromagnet 118, when the pawl, by engaging the ratchet wheel, holds the screw from rotation, whereby as the hanger swings, it is fed axially of the screw. The circuit of the magnet contains two sets of contacts, one set 123, 124, Fig. 14, being closed by an arm 119 on the hollow shaft 83, and the other set 126, 130 being closed by a lever 129 carrying a disc 128 which bears on the roller surface being ground. Thus, if a roller is not ground to size, the disc 128 causes the lever 129 to close the contacts 126, 130 and as the contacts 123, 124 also are closed at the end of the swing, the magnet 118 is energized and the pawl 116 comes into operation to cause the. grinding-wheel to be fed sufficiently to compensate for wear. The contacts 126, 130 are not closed if the work is ground to size.
