Abstract

The system comprises a pedal crank 6 acting on a forward chainwheel 1, which is coupled by a chain to the rear wheel, via an additional transmission, e.g. a chain drive. The chainwheel 1 is located higher than the crank axis to provide increased clearance of the chainwheel. The chainwheel 1 can be interchangeable or a plurality can be provided for variable gearing ratios.

Description

CYCLE TRANSMISSION SYSTEM THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A PEDAL CYCLE PEDAL CYCLES ARE COMMON AND MOST HAVE A DRIVE SYSTEM OF A SIMILAR LAYOUT. A DISADVANTAGE OF THIS CONFIGURATION IS THE VULNERABLE POSITION OF THE FORWARD CHAINWHEEL WHICH IS EASILY DAMAGED WHEN RIDING OVER OBSTACLES.
AN OBJECT OF THIS INVENTION IS TO PROVIDE A CYCLE WITH NO VULNERABLE FORWARD CHAINWHEEL, GIVE INCREASED GROUND CLEARANCE AND ALLOW EXTRA GEARING POSSIBILITIES.
THIS INVENTION PROVIDES A CYCLE WITH THE FORWARD CHAINWHEEL RELOCATED TO A LESS VULNERABLE POSITION.
A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION WILL NOW BE DESCRIBED WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS IN WHICH: FIG. l SHOWS A VIEW FROM THE RIGHT HAND SIDE.
FIG. 2 SHOWS A VIEW FROM THE LEFT HAND SIDE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 1, THE CYCLE COMPRISES A FORWARD CHAINWHEEL 1 WHICH HAS BEEN RELOCATED AWAY FROM ITS ORIGINAL POSITION ON THE PEDAL CRANK 6.
AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2, THE MEANS OF TRANSFERRING DRIVE FROM THE PEDAL CRANK 6 TO THE FORWARD CHAINWHEEL 1 VIA AN ADDITIONAL TRANSMISSION SYSTEM COMPRISING OF A LOWER CHAINWHEEL 2 AN UPPER CHAINWHEEL 3 AND CHAIN 4. CHAINWHEELS 1 AND 3 ARE ATTACHED TO A COMMON SHAFT AND BEARING ASSEMBLY.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A PEDAL CYCLE WITH NO VULNERABLE FORWARD CHAINWHEEL AND INCREASED GROUND CLEARANCE.
  2. 2. A PEDAL CYCLE AS IN CLAIM 1 WITH INTERCHANGEABLE UPPER CHAINWHEELS OF VARYING SIZES AND A CHAIN TENSIONER TO ALLOW A SELECTION OF GEAR RATIOS.
  3. 3. A PEDAL CYCLE AS IN CLAIM 1 WITH TWO OR MORE FIXED UPPER CHAINWHEELS AND A DERAILLEUR SYSTEM OF KNOWN TYPE TO ALLOW THE SELECTION OF EXTRA GEAR RATIOS WHILE ON THE MOVE.
  4. 4. A PEDAL CYCLE SUBSTANTIALLY AS HEREIN DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED IN THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWINGS.
