Abstract

The invention provides a method for removing oil from waste drilling mud (WDM) comprising mixing WDM with a microemulsion-forming surfactant and allowing the mixture to separate into phases wherein the interfacial tension between the microemulsion phase and conjugate polar phase is less than 10<SP>-4</SP> mNm<SP>-1</SP>. The oil may be biodegraded by inoculating the nucroemulsion oil containing phase with hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms such as bacteria belonging to the genera <U>Rhodococcus</U>, <U>Gordona</U>, or <U>Tsukamurella</U>.
