Abstract

Product display packaging comprises a backing member 1 of planar material with a substantially L-shaped cross section defining a base 2 and upright 3. The base and upright are both connected to the product 7, preferably with plastic securing ties 13 and 16. The product may be an item such as a blowlamp or lantern. The base supports the product, and can have a triangular cross section (23, Figure 7). The backing member is preferably made of card, and the base and upright can be from a single piece or separate pieces joined together. The backing member may have apertures (8 and 9, Figure 3) through which the product may protrude to locate the product. A plastic hanger 14 may be attached to an aperture near the top of the upright. The hanger extends to a greater extent on the rear of the upright such that the securing tie through the upright also goes through it. The product may sit in either a stabilizing base 10 or on a stand (32, Figure 6), which is secured to the base by securing ties. The hanger, stabilizing base and stand are preferably of a plastics material. Information about the product may be printed on the member on either or both of the base and upright.

2341838 -1 PRODUCT DISPLAY PACKAGING The present invention relates to

product display packaging.

Product display packaging is already well known. Its primary purpose to support a product for example on a shelf and display it for sale. In one known form of packaging the product is contained in a transparent bubble which is usually complementary in shape to a part of the product and which Is sealed to a backing member usually made of cardboard. The backing member generally carries information about the product. This form of packaging can obscure the product at least partially from the potential buyer. It is not particularly environmentally friendly and it may be expensive to produce. In another form of packaging, the product is contained in a box. This wholly conceals the product from the potential buyer leading to products being removed from such packaging for inspection and often not replaced. It is also bulkier than is necessary and relatively expensive.

According to the present invention, there is provided product display packaging comprising a backing member having a first portion adapted in use to support the product and a second portion adapted in use to be upright and means for connecting a product to be displayed to the first and second portions.

In a preferred embodiment of the Invention, the backing member Is of L-shaped cross-section. The base of the L provides the first portion and the upright, the second portion. Alternatively, the member may have a triangular cross section lower second portion. The member may be made of card or any other suitable material. Advantageously, the backing member is in one piece. Alternatively, the first and second portions may be separate and joined together. The backing member may be provided with apertures enabling the product to be displayed to protrude through to the back of the member thus providing means to locate the product. The means for connecting the product to the portions comprises security ties for connecting the product to the backing member at the top and the bottom.

In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, embodiments thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 shows a front elevational view of a product displayed on packaging, Figure 2 shows a side elevational view of the display product combination of figure 1, Figure 3 shows a rear elevational view of the combination of figures 1 and 2, Figure 4 is a plan view of the combination of figures 1, 2 and 3, Figure 5 is a cross sectional view through part of the combination of figures 1 to 4.

Figure 6 shows a front elevational view of an alternative display product combination. and Figure 7 shows a side elevational view of the combination of Figure 6.

Referring to the drawings, there is provided a backing member. 1 of L-shaped cross-section. The base 2 of the L-shape provides a support for the product and the upright 3 of the L provides means to locate the product.

The backing member 1 is made from a single piece of card or other suitable material. Alternatively the base 2 and upright 3 may be made separately and joined together. Information about the product, which in this case is a blowlamp 4, may be printed on the member to either side of the product 4 on either of both of the upright and base.

The upright 3 Is cut centrally to provide shutters 5 and 6 through which a gas cartridge 7 forrrdng part of the blowlamp 4 partially extends to the rear. These shutters 5 and 6 are bonded at the top and bottom by cut out portions 8 and 9 through which corresponding parts of the product also extend. At the bottom the gas cartridge is provided with a stabilizing base comprising a recess 11 in which the cartridge sits and a concentric surrounding flange 12 which sits on the base 2 of the backing member 1.

The base 10 extends through the cut-out 9 and is moulded from synthetic plastics material. The base 10 is secured to the base 2 by a security tie 13 which extends through the base 2 and the base 10.

-4 Towards the top of the backing member 1 is fitted a synthetic plastics material hanging tag 14 which is inserted into a corresponding aperture in the backing member 1. This tag 14 defines a shaped aperture 15 and extends to a greater extent on the rear of the backing member 1 than on the front. A further security tie 16 extends around part of the burner 17 of the blowlamp 4 and through the backing member 1 and tag 14 at the back of the member 1. The security ties may be of synthetic plastics or other suitable material.

Referring to Figure 6 and 7, a second embodiment is shown also comprising a backing member 21 and also made of card or other suitable material. In contrast to the first described embodiment, however, this backing member comprises a first upper portion 22 which is upright and a second lower portion 23 which is of triangular cross-section to form a support. The member is formed with an aperture 24 to locate a product 25 which in this case Is a lantern. A hanger 26 of synthetic plastics material, is connected to the backing member 21. This hanger 26 is of inverted Y shape and defines an aperture 27 which coincides with a similarly positioned and shaped aperture 28 in the backing member 21. A security fie 29 extends around the product 25 and through further coincident pairs of apertures 30 and 31 in the hanger 26 and backing member 21, thus connecting product, member and hanger together. The apertures 30, 31 extend through the extremities of the arms of the Y of the hanger 26.

A product stand 32 is disposed in the lower portion 23 of the backing member 21. This stand 32 comprises a base 33, and upright 34 and is screwed to the product 24. A further security tie 35 extends through the base 33 and member 21 connecting the stand (and therefore the product) to the backing member 21. The stand 32 and security ties 29 and 35 may be made or synthetic plastics or other suitable material.

The above arrangement provides a stable secure display for the product without obscuring it from a potential buyer. It may be supported on a shelf or hung using the hanging tag.

It will be appreciated that the above embodiments have been described by way of example only and that many variations are possible without departing from the scope of the invention.

Product display packaging comprising a backing member having a first portion adapted in use to support the product and a second portion adapted in use to be upright and means for connecting a product to be displayegto the first and second portions.
2. Product display packaging as claimed in claim 1, in which the backing member is of L-shaped cross-section.
3. Product display packaging as claimed in claim 2, in which the base of the L provides the first portion and the upright the second portion.
4. Product display packaging as claimed in claim 1, in which the first portion has a triangular cross section.
5. Product display packaging as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the backing member is made of card or other suitable material.
6. Product display packaging as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the backing member is in one piece.
7. Product display packaging as claimed in any of claims 1 to 5, in which the first and second portions are separate and joined together.
8. Product display packaging as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the backing member comprises apertures through which, in use, a product to be displayed may protrude to locate the product.
9. Product display packaging as claimed in any preceding claim, in which -7the means for connecting a product to be displayed comprise securing ties.
10. Product display packaging substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 5 or to Figures 6 and 7 of the accompanying drawings.
