Abstract
A nail hammer includes a handle 30 and a head 20 secured to the handle. The head includes a striking member 21 formed on one end and a split claw 22 formed on the other end and having a groove 23 for forming a pair of legs. The groove includes an open end and a root portion. The split claw includes a hole 24 formed in the root portion 28 of the legs and communicating with the root portion of the groove for eliminating stress concentration. It is preferable that the hole includes a circular cross section.
Description
2341573 NAIL HAMMER HAVING A REINFORCING STRUCTURE The invention relates
to a nail hammer having a split claw that has a reinforcing structure.
Typical nail hammers comprise a hammer head secured on one end of a handle shank and having a split claw to provide the proper leverage for pulling nails. The split claw includes a V-shaped groove for engaging with the nails to be pulled. However, the sharp root portion of the groove is a stress concentration area where will be easily broken after use.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide a nail hammer having a reinforcing structure for preventing the split claw from being easily damaged.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a nail hammer comprising:
a) a handle, and b) a head secured to the handle, the head including a first end having a striking member and including a second end having a split claw provided thereon, the split claw including a groove formed therein for defining a pair of legs, the groove including an open end and a root portion, the legs including a root portion corresponding to that of the groove, and the split claw including a hole formed in the root portion of the legs and communicating with the root portion of the groove for eliminating stress 2 concentration purposes.
The hole preferably includes a circular cross section. The root portions of the legs may be closely engaged with each other or may be separated from each other or may be slightly contacted with each other.
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a nail hammer; FIG. 2 is a perspective view of a head of the nail hammer, in which a portion of the split claw is cut off for showing the reinforcing structure of the split claw; and FIGS. 3, 4 and 5 are partial plan views illustrating the applications of the split claw.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, a nail hammer comprises a head 20 secured on one end of a handle shank 30 and including a striking member 21 provided in one end and a split claw 22 provided in the other end to provide the proper leverage for pulling nails. The split claw 22 includes a V-shaped groove 23 having an open end 26 and a narrower root portion 28 for defining a pair of legs 25, and includes a hole 24 formed in the root portion of the legs 25 corresponding to the root portion 28 of the groove 23 and communicating with the groove 23. The root portion 28 of the groove 23 is the position or the area where stress will mostly be concentrated. The provision of the hole 24 may eliminate the stress concentration problem.
Referring next to FIGS. 3-5, the root portions of 3 the legs 25 at the root portion 28 of the groove 23 may be closely engaged with each other (FIG. 3) or may be slightly separated from each other (FIG. 4) or may be slightly contacted with each other (FIG. 5). The hole 05.24 may all be provided for eliminating the stress concentration problem. It is preferable that the hole 24 includes a circular cross section, but may also include a cross section having the other shapes, such as an oval-shape, a square shape etc.
Claims (3)
1. A nail hammer comprising:
handle, and head secured to the handle, the head including a first end having a striking member and including a second end having a split claw provided thereon, the split claw including a groove formed therein for defining a pair of legs, the groove including an open end and a root portion, the legs including a root portion corresponding to that of the groove, and the split claw including a hole formed in the root portion of the legs and communicating with the root portion of the groove for eliminating stress concentration purposes.
2. The nail hammer according to claim 1, wherein the hole includes a circular cross section.
3. The nail hammer substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
