Steam-engine and like indicators.-Comprises a method and apparatus for indicating the average pressure or average power of piston engines characterized in that for each working space one terminal voltage is made dependent on the one hand on the piston pressure and on the other hand either on the sine of the crank angle or on the momentary piston speed. A voltage E<1> is applied to the points 1, 2 of a resistance 5, Fig. 2. the resistance 5 are a stationary contact 7 and a contact 6 moved by a crank and guide mechanism 8, 9 from the engine. The contact 6 is thus moved proportionally to the sine of the crank angle "a" so that the potential difference E2 across points 3. 4 is proportional to sine a. The contact 7 is adjusted so that this potential difference is zero when a is zero. In a similar arrangement. Fig. 3, a contact 6<1> is moved by a steam engine indicator 10 so that the potential difference E3 is proportional to E2 x p where p is the pressure of the working fluid. If both circuits are connected in series by connecting the terminals 1<1>, 2<1> of Fig. 3 to the terminals 3, 4 of Fig. 2 the potential difference E3 will be proportional to E1 x p x sin a. In a modification the voltage is similarly varied by varying the resistance in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge. In a further form a coil is rotated in a uniform magnetic field and generates a current proportional to the speed x sin a or the coil may be reciprocated by a crank and link mechanism to cut across a magnetic field.
