Description

2340163 Cill Arrangfment for UPVC Window This invention relates to a cill
arrangement for UPVC windows.
Generally, in the prior art relating to UPVC windows, the external cill is integrally formed with the bottom extrusion of the main window frame.
When new buildings are being built, it is usual to install the windows at a relatively early stage in construction, e.g. erection of the walls. As a result, during continued construction work, the window cills can easily be damaged, necessitating replacement of the complete window frame.
An object of the present invention is to provide a solution to this problem.
However, the invention is by no means limited to windows being installed in new buildings, but also finds application in the field of replacement windows.
According to the invention, there is provided a cill arrangement for UPVC windows and doors, comprising a sub-cill in the form of a UPVC extrusion adapted to connect to a UPVC window or door frame between said frame and the bottom of a wall opening, and a cill nosing in the form of an extrusion adapted to connect detachably to the side of the sub-cill on the wall exterior.
The cill nosing may also be of UPVC, but alternative materials such as glass fibre or even aluminium in extruded form may be employed for this component.
In one embodiment, the upper side of the sub-cill has formations for clipping to formations on the underside of the window or door frame, while the exterior side of the sub-cill has formations with which formations at the inner end of the cill nosing engage to clip the cill nosing to the sub-cill.
In this case, the cill nosing preferably clips into engagement with the sub-cill by a downward angular movement of the cill nosing about the inner end of said cill nosing, from a position in which the cill nosing is inclined upwardly and outwardly relative to the sub-cill into a final position in which the cill nosing is locked to the sub-cill against further downward angular movement, whereby the cill nosing is detachable from the sub-cill by a reverse upward angular movement. In one construction, the sub-cill has a formation to which hooks a formation on the cill nosing, and the said downward angular movement of the cill nosing is a pivotal movement about the location of said hooked together formations until a part of the cill nosing abuts against a second formation on the sub-cill.
The invention is not only applicable to planar windows but also to bay windows.
Preferably, therefore, in the case of a bay window, each window section has a sub-cill and cill nosing. In one bay window embodiment, at a comer pole between adjacent window sections, the ends of the sub-cills abut and locate to a comer moulding surrounding the comer pole. Preferably. the cill nosings are longer than the sub-cills, and adjacent cill nosings join on a radial line through the corresponding comer pole. In this instance, at a Join between adjacent cill nosings, a lipped fillet is inserted, the lips overlying the upper surfaces of the cill nosings at the joint.
In the case of both planar and bay windows, conveniently an additional UPVC extrusion is attachable to the interior side of the sub-cill to locate the edge of an interior finishing board.
A cill arrangement in accordance with the invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure I shows a detachable cill arrangement for a UPVC window-, Figures 2A, 2B and 2C show application of the arrangement of Figure I to cills of differing widths; Figures 3A to 3C show a sequence of steps in the act of fining a detachable cill; and Figure 4 shows the means by which the invention may be applied to a bay window.
Referring to Figure 1, the bottom extrusion 10 of a UPVC window frame, which is an extrusion common to all four sides of the frame, has clipped beneath it a sub-cill 12, which has on its upper side formations 14 clipping to standard formations 16 on the frame.
On its exterior side, the sub-cill has formations 18, 20, with which formations '71, 24 on a cill nosing 26 engage to clip the cill nosing to the sub-cill. The method by which the cill nosing 26 clips to the subcill 12 is shown in Figures 3A to 3C. The formation 22 on the cill nosing 26 is progressively hooked under the formation 18 on sub-cill 12 by a downwardly pivotal-type movement of the cill nosing 26 about the position of engagement of the formations 22 and 18, until the formation 24 on the cill nosing abuts the formation 20 on the sub-cill. The cill nosing 26, in particular, may be extruded of a material other than UPVC, such as glass fibre or aluminium.
Fitting of the cill nosing 26 is completed by application of a mastic snip seal 28 (Figures 2A to 2C) between the cill nosing and the bottom of the wall opening in which the main window frame is installed. This locks the cill nosing in place. It will thus be appreciated that the cill nosing 26 can be detached, e.g. for replacement, simply by cutting the seal 28 and unhooking the cill nosing from the sub-cill 12 by a reverse pivotal movement to the above-described for fitting the cill nosing. Thus, the cill nosing can be fitted after construction work, including installation of the main window frames, on a building has been substantially completed. The cill nosing is also replaceable, in the event of damage, at any time in the life of the window.
Figures 2A to 2C show that the invention is readily applicable to different cavity wall widths and different exterior/interior positions of the window frame in the wall opening, simply by use of different widths of cill nosing.
Ficure 4 illustrates the means by which the invention is made applicable to bay windows. T'hus, a joint moulding 30 is provided to surround the bottom of a sleeved, structural comer pole 32 (sleeve referenced 34) in a bay window structure. The moulding 30 has two angled faces formed with protrusions 36 with which the ends of the sub-cills 38, 38A engage and locate, and the cill nosings 40, 40A clip to these sub-cills in the same way as hitherto described with reference to Figures 1, 2 and 3.
The cill nosings 40, 40A are, however, longer than the sub-cills so as almost to abut in a radial plane through the axis of the comer pole 32. At the join between the cill nosings 40, 40A a lipped fillet 42 is inserted, the lips of which overlie the immediate end regions of the cill nosings 40, 40A, in order to take up manufacturing tolerances and provide an aesthetically pleasing finish to the complete exterior cill of the bay window.
Finally, reverting to Figure 1, it can be seen that an additional extrusion 44 for clipping to the interior side of the sub-cill may be provided to locate an interior finishing board 46.
The invention is equally applicable to door frames, to enable the provision of a separable extefior door cill.
