Abstract
The catch includes a plate 1 which strikes a latch 2 on closure of a door 5 to prevent complete door closure and leave a sufficient gap between the door and a frame 4 to prevent jamming of fingers therebetween. To close the door completely, a handle 3 is rotated to withdraw the latch such that it passes the plate without obstruction. The latch can be either a spring loaded type, as shown, or a fixed type (Fig.2). The door handles on opposite sides of the door may be swapped and operated by turning them upwards rather than downwards.
Description
2338743 DOOR SAFETY CATCH This invention relates to a door safety catch A
lot off fingers get caught in doors, especially children, who tend to close the door by means of the door unaware of trapping their fingers between the door and door frame, or the door might get shut by accident i. e by the wind, when there fingers are in the way. There seems to be a need for a device which is cheap & easy to fit which prevents the door from being closed properly by accedent, preventing fingers from getting trapped, but allows the door to be closed properly when needed.
According to the present invention there is provided a Door saftey catch which prevents fingers from being trapped between the door and door frame when pushed/pulled shut by preventing the door from being closed properly by means of a special striking plate which strikes the latch leaving sufficient gap between the door and door frame to stop fingers getting trapped, but allows the door to be closed properly when the door handles are used.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by the way of examples with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 shows outside view of door against safety catch against reversed spring loaded latch leaving sufficient gap to prevent fingers getting trapped Figure 2 shows outside view of door against safety catch against fixed type latch leaving sufficient gap to prevent fingers getting trapped Figure 3 shows inside view of door against satefy catch leaving sufficient gap to prevent fingers getting trapped Figure 4 shows door closed Referring to the drawings the safety catch comprises of a special striking plate 1, which prevents the door 5 from being closed properly when pushed/pulled shut by striking the latch 2,6. which then leaves sufficient gap between door 5 and frame 4 to prevent fingers from being trapped as shown in Fig 1, Fig 2 and Fig 3.
The latch can either be a spring loaded type latch 2 as shown in Fig 1 or a f ixed type latch 6 (only retracts when the handle is used) as shown in Fig 2 In the case of a spring loaded latch 2 the special striking plate 1 has to strike a square face on the latch 2. The latch 2 has to be fitted 180 deg. to normal as shown in Fig 1 to prevent the latch retracting upon striking the special striking plate.
In order to close the door properly as shown in Fig 4, the handles 3 are used either in the normal manner (by turning down) or the handles 3 are fitted (swapped over) so that the door 5 can only close by turning the handles 3 up which gives extra safety,as children find it harder to turn the handles up.
If a spring loaded latch 2 as been fitted as shown in Fig 1 then the door 5 will only close by use of the handle 3, but can be opened by simply pushing the door as the radius part of latch 2 will assest in retracting the latch 2 to open the door 5 If a fixed type latch 6 as been fitted as shown in Fig 2 then the door 5 will only open and close by use of the handles 3.

Claims (1)
1 Door saftey catch prevents fingers from being trapped between the door and door frame when pushed/pulled shut by preventing the door from being closed properly by means of a special striking plate which strikes the latch leaving sufficient gap between the door and door frame to stop fingers getting trapped, but allows the door to be closed properly when the door handles are used.
2 A door saftey catch as claimed in claim 1 which uses a spring loaded latch. Where the latch is fitted 180 deg. from normal by allowing the square part of the latch to strike the special strike plate.
3 A door saftey catch as claimed in previous claims which uses a fixed type latch (only retracts when the handle is used) 4 A door saftey catch as claimed in previous claims which uses exsisting latch and handles, where the exsisting strike plate is exchanged for the special strike plate.
A door saftey catch as claimed in previous claims where the handles are used in the normal maner (by turning down) to rectract the latch 6 A door saftey catch as clamed in previous claims where the handles are swapped over so they opperate by having to turn them up to retract the latch to open or close the door.
7 A door safety catch substantially as described herein with referance to Ficlures 1-4 of the accomanying drawings
