Abstract
A tool box includes a casing 1, a tool rack 2 pivoted to two opposite side walls 11 of the casing 1, the tool rack 2 having tool holes 22 and stop rods for holding tool bits, and a cover 3 pivoted to the tool rack 2 for covering the tool rack 2 inside the casing. The tool rack 2 has two protruded blocks 211 raised from two opposite sides thereof and respectively pivoted to the two opposite side walls of the casing 11, each block having a beveled stop edge 2112; the cover 3 has two lugs 311 pivoted to the two opposite side walls of the tool rack 2. The lugs 311 each have a beveled stop edge 3113 for engaging the beveled stop edges 2112 of the protruded blocks 211 of the tool rack 2 to hold the cover in an opened position perpendicular to the tool rack 2 and the cover 3 may then be moved to a fully open position, with the tool rack 2 projecting upwardly, by pivoting the cover 3 and tool rack 2 relative to the casing 1. The tool rack 2 includes springy retaining portions for holding the tool bits.

The present invention relates to a tool box for keeping tool bits and tool accessories, and wore particularly to such a tool box which has means to hold inserted tool bits/accessories in place.
A regular tool box is generally comprised of a casing, a tool rack Pivoted to the casing by pivot means, and a cover turned about the pivot means for closing the tool rack. This structure of tool box is not satisfactory in function. Before opening the tool rack for arranging tool bits, the cover must be opened from the casing. When not in use, the tool rack must be turned inwards and received inside the casing before closing the cover. Further, storage tool bits may be moved out of place when the tool box is shaken.

The present invention has been accomplished to provide a tool box which eliminates the aforesaid drawbacks. According to one aspect of the present invention, the tool box is comprised of a casing. a tool rack pivoted to two opposite side walls of the casing and turned in and out of the casing, the tool rack having tool holes and stop rods for holding tool bits, and a cover Pivoted to the tool rack for covering the tool rack inside the casing, wherein the tool rack has tow protruded blocks raised from two opposite sides thereof and respectively pivoted to the two opposite side walls of the casing, each protruded block having a beveled stop edge; the cover has two lugs pivoted to the two opposite side walls of the tool rack, the lugs each having a beveled stop edge for stopped against the beveled stop edges at the protruded blocks of the tool rack to hold the cover in an opened position perpendicular to the tool rack. According to another aspect of the present invention, the tool rack has protruded springy retaining portions respectively raised from a bottom wall thereof for holding tool bits in the tool holes.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings. in which:

Referring to Figure 2, the casing 1 comprises a rectangular top open chamber 10, which receives the tool rack 2, two recessed portions 110 respectively provided at two opposite vertical side walls 11 thereof at one end at an inner side for engagement with respective raised portions 312 at the cover 3 to hold the cover 3 in a closed position, two pivot holes 111 respectively provided at the vertical side walls 11 at one end remote from the recessed portions 110, locating grooves 12; 16 inside the rectangular top open chamber 10 for the positioning of the cover 3, a hanging board 13 extended from one end thereof and defining a hanging hole 131 for hanging, and a stop block 14 disposed inside the top open chamber 10 and spaced between the pivot holes 111 for limiting the turning angle of the tool rack 2.
Referring to Figures 2. 7 and 8, the tool rack 2 comprises two opposite lateral side walls 21, two pivot pins 2111 respectively raised from the side walls 21 at one end and inserted into the Pivot holes 111 on the vertical side walls 11 of the casing 1, a plurality of tool holes 22 for holding different sizes of tool bits 4. a Plurality of stop rods 241 respectively raised from the inside wall 24 thereof at different locations for stopping inserted tool bits 4 in the tool holes 22, and chamfered guide edges 212; 231 at the rear side wall 23 thereof for guiding the rotary motion of the tool rack 2.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3. the cover 3 comprises two lugs 311 longitudinally and respectively extended from two opposite vertical lateral side walls 31 thereof. two Pivot rods 3111 respectively raised from the lugs 311 at an inner side and pivoted to the tool rack 2, a finger strip 322 extended from the top side wall 32 thereof at one end remote from the lugs 311 through which the cover 3 can be lifted with the hand, and two raised portions 312 respectively raised from the vertical lateral side walls 31 at one end remote from the lugs 311 for engagement with the recessed portions 110 at the vertical side walls 11 of the casing 1 to hold the cover 3 in the closed p o S 1 t 1 o n.
The characteristics of the present invention are outlined hereinafter with reference to Figures from 3 to 8. The tool rack 2 comprises to protruded blocks 211 respectively raised from the two opposite side walls 21 30 with which the Pivot pins 2111 are integral. When the Pivot pins 2111 of the tool rack 2 are respectively side are 0 f the coupled to the Pivot holes 111 on the vertical walls 11 of the casing 1, the Protruded blocks 21 disposed in contact with the vertical side walls the casing 1 to prevent a direct contact between side walls 21 of the tool rack 2 and the vertical side walls 11 of the easing 1, and narrow gaps are respectively defined between the side walls 21 of the tool rack 2 and the vertical side walls 11 of the casing 1 for receiving the lugs 311 of the cover 3 (see Figure 3). The pivot rods 3111 of the cover 3 are respectively coupled to two pivot holes 210 at the side walls 21 of the tool rack 2, enabling the lugs 311 of the cover 3 to be stopped at respective beveled stop 0 edges 2112 at the protruded blocks 211 of the tool rack 21 and turned with the cover 3 between the closed position shown in Figures 3 and 4, and the opened position shown in Figures 6 and 8. The tool rack 2 further comprises a plurality of protruded springy retaining portions 2211 respectively raised from the bottom wall 221 thereof and partially projecting into th tool holes 22 for holding the upper ends of inserted tool bits 4 in the tool holes 22 (see Figures 7 and 8).
The lugs 311 of the cover 3 each have a smoothly curved guide edge 3112 and a beveled stop edge 3113. When the cover 3 is lifted from the casing 1 and turned from the closed position to the open position, the beveled stop edges 3113 of the lugs 311 are respectively stopped at the beveled stop edges 2112 of the protruded blocks 211 of the tool rack 2. and therefore the cover 3 is retained in the opened position. The cover 3 further comprises a plurality of ribs 321 respectively raised from the border of the top side wall 32 (see Figure 2).
When the cover 3 is turned to the opened position and the tool rack 2 is turned out of the casing 1, the ribs 321 are supported on the ground or working table on which the tool case is placed, to prevent a direct contact between the top side wall 32 and the ground/working table (see Figure 8).
When the cover 3 is opened, the beveled stop edges 3113 of the lugs 311 are respectively stopped at the beveled stop edges 2112 of the protruded blocks 211 of the tool rack 2, and therefore the cover 3 is retained in the opened position (see Figures 2 and 5). After the cover 3 has been opened, the tool rack 2 is turned out of the casing 1 to a vertical position (see Figures 6 and 8), enabling tool bits 4 to be inserted into or removed from the tool holes 22. When not in use. the cover 3 and the tool rack 2 are respectively turned inwards and received in the top open chamber 10 of the casing 1 (see Figures 3 and 4). When closed, the raised portions 312 of the cover 3 are respectively forced into engagement with the recessed portions 110 of the casing 1.
Figure 9 shows an alternate fore of the present invention. According to this alternate form, the stop rods 241 are made having a flat shape, and the protruded springy retaining portions 2211 are integral with and obliquely extended from the bottom edge of the bottom wall 221.

Claims (4)
1. A tool box, comprising:
a substantially rectilinear casing, a substantially rectilinear tool rack having an open end for receiving tools and an opposed closed end, the tool rack being locatable within the casing and pivotably fixed, by a tool box pivot, to the casing proximate the closed end, the tool rack having stop means located proximate the tool rack pivot between the pivot and the open end, and a lid pivoted to the casing tool box by a lid pivot located proximate the tool rack pivot between the tool rack stop means and the open end, the lid having engagement means for co-operating with the stop means, whereby on pivotably opening the lid to a substantially perpendicular position relative the casing, the engagement means abuts the stop means to retain the lid in a substantially perpendicular position and such that on further opening the lid to a substantially co-planar position with respect to the casing, the engagement means co-operates with the stop means to pivot the tool rack to a substantially perpendicular position with respect to the casing.
2. A tool box as claimed in claim 1, wherein the tool rack incorporates resilient means whereby tools may be removably retained within the tool rack.
3. A tool box comprising:
a casing. said casing comprising a rectangular top open chamber, two vertical side walls, two recessed portions respectively Provided at the two vertical side walls thereof at one end at an inner side, two pivot holes respectively Provided at the two vertical side walls thereof at an opposite end, a hanging board extended from one end thereof and defining a hanging hole for hanging. and a stop block disposed inside said top open chamber and spaced between said pivot holes; a tool rack Pivoted to said casing and turned between a first position where said toot rack is received in said top open chamber of said casing. and a second position where said tool rack is stopped by said stop block of said casing in a vertical position outside said top open chamber and perpendicualr to said casing, said tool rack comprising two opposite side walls, two pivot pins respectively raised from the two opposite side walls thereof at one end and coupled to the pivot holes on said casing, two pivot holes respectively provided at two opposite side walls and spaced from said pivot pins, a plurality of tool holes for holding different sizes of tool bits. a plurality of stop rods respectively raised from an inside wall thereof for stopping inserted tool bits in said tool holes. and chamfered guide edges at a rear side wall thereof for guiding the rotary motion of the tool rack; and a cover Pivoted to said tool rack said tool rack within said casing, for covering said cover comprising two lugs longitudinally and respectively extended from two opposite vertical lateral side walls thereof. two Pivot rods respectively raised from said lugs at an inner side and coupled to the Pivot holes on said tool rack. a finger strip extended from a top side wall thereof at one end remote from said lugs through which said cover can be lifted with the hand, and two raised portions for engagement with the recessed portions of said casing to hold said cover in a closed position closed on said casing; wherein said tool rack comprises to protruded blocks respectively raised from the two opposite side walls thereof with which the pviot pins of said tool 5 rack are integral, said protruded blocks being disposed in contact with the vertical side walls of said casing to prevent a direct contact between the side walls of said tool rack and the vertical side walls of said casing, enabling two narrow gaps to be respectively 20 defined between the side walls of said tool rack and the vertical side walls of said casing for receiving the lugs of said cover, a plurality of protruded springy retaining Portions respectively raised from a bottom wall thereof and partially projecting into said 5 tool holes for holding upper end of inserted tool bits in said tool holes. and two beveled stop edges respectively provided at said protruded blocks for stopping said cover in an opened position Perpendicular to said tool rack; said lugs of said cover each have a 30 smoothly curved guide edge and a beveled stop edge, the beveled stop edges of said lugs of said cover being respectively stopped at the beveled stop edges at the protruded blocks of said tool rack when said cover is turned outwards from said tool rack. enabling said cover to be retained in an opened position; said cover comprises a plurality of ribs respectively raised from the border of the top side wall thereof.
4. A tool box substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in Figs. 2 to 8 or Figs. 2 to 8 as modified by Fig. 9 of the accompanying drawings.
