Abstract

A lock-able enclosure for, for example, a bicycle, is defined by a back (15,17), a front (13,14) and a top (10). The sides (11 and 12) are hingedly connected to the back, and the front is formed in two portions (13 and 14) each hingedly connected to one of the sides (11,12). The top (10) is hingedly connected to the back, and locking means are provided for locking the two portions (13 and 14) of the front together, and to the top (10). The back of the enclosure (15,17) can be attached to a wall and the enclosure can be folded flat against it.

Description

2338005 LOCKABLEENCLOSURES of the Invention This invention relates to
lockable enclosures and has for its object the provision of a lockable enclosure which can be used for a variety of purposes.
Cycle thefts are extremely common, both for bicycles and for motor cycles and, with the increasing pressures on space, it is desirable that a facility should be provided for the storage of cycles which is efficient in respect of its utilisation of space.
It is accordingly a further object of the present invention to provide a lockable enclosure which affords such facility.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a lockable enclosure which can be used for the storage of such items of garden equipment as lawnmowers.
Summary of the Invention
2 According to the present invention there is provided a lockable enclosure defined by a back, a front, sides and a top, in which the sides are hingedly connected to the back, the front is formed in two portions each hingedly connected to a respective one of the sides, the top is hingedly connected to the back, and locking means are provided for locking the two portions of the front together and to the top.
The two portions of the front of the enclosure are preferably of equal width and the arrangement is preferably such that the sides and front of the enclosure can be folded so as to lie flat against the back of the enclosure and extend for the width of the enclosure.
As applied to an enclosure for a bicycle, the width of each portion of the front of the box is preferably the same as the length of the sides of the enclosure, with the arrangement such that the top of the enclosure can be folded down over the sides and front of the enclosure. The width of the front of the enclosure will preferably be slightly greater than the length of a bicycle.
For an enclosure for a motor cycle, the width of the enclosure will preferably be slightly greater than the length of the motor cycle and the lengths of the sides of the enclosure will preferably be greater than the width of the motor cycle.
The locking means for locking the two portions of the front together and to the top preferably comprises a lock having a hasp which passes through aligned apertures in brackets attached to or 3 forming part of the two portions of the front and the top of the enclosure.
The top of the enclosure preferably has a peripheral downwardly depending lip arranged to overlie the sides and the front of the enclosure so as to prevent unauthorised access to the interior of the enclosure and to provide a stable structure.
The back of the encllosure is preferably provided with means whereby it can attached to a wall and may be a complete sheet or, typically, will only include a top cross member and depending side members, each formed with apertures for receiving threaded fasteners. The apertures will be formed in such positions that, when the enclosure is attached to the wall, the sides and front of the enclosure will reach to the floor, thereby avoiding any need for a floor when the enclosure is positioned on top of, for example, a concrete path or like solid foundation.
The two portions of the front, the sides and the top of the enclosure are all preferably formed from synthetic plastics materials, typically reinforced polyester resins, with rolled edge formations which cooperate with the parts to which they are connected to receive the hinge pins.
Brief DescriDdon of the Drawings Figure 1 is an isometric view of a lockable enclosure in its In use" condition, 4 Figure 2 shows the enclosure in its uflat-folded" condition, and Figure 3 shows the enclosure in its fully open condition.
Brief Description of the Drawings
The enclosure shown in the drawings is of rectangular form in plan view and of rectangular form in front view. It includes a top 10, sides 11 and 12, a front formed by two front portions 13 and 14 and a back formed by two uprights 15 and 16 and a top cross member 17.
The two uprights 15 and 16 and the top cross member 17 are typically of Lsection, as shown, and are formed with apertures to receive fasteners, e. g. fixing bolts, for attachment of the enclosure to a wall (not shown).
The components of the enclosure are formed from reinforced polyester resin or other suitable synthetic plastics material and each component is formed with rolled edge portions 18 which receive hinge pins and thereby provide hinge connections between the various components.
Optional wheels 19 may be attached to the undersides of the adjacent edge portions of the two portions 13 and 14 of the front of the enclosure to facilitate movement of the parts of the enclosure between their fully open position shown in Figure 3, their flat-folded position shown in Figure 2 and their operative position shown in Figure 1.
The two portions 13 and 14 of the front of the enclosure are of equal width, which width is the same as the length of each side 11, 12 of the enclosure. The abutting edges of the two front portions 13 and 14 fit closely together and brackets 20 are attached to the two front portions 13 and 14 adjacent the tops of the two abutting edges of said front portions 13 and 14. These two brackets 20 fit one on each side of a bracket 21 attached to the top 10 of the enclosure. The three brackets 20 and 21 are formed with apertures which can be brought into alignment to receive the hasp of a lock (not shown).
The top 10 of the enclosure is formed with a depending flange 22 which, in the assembled or In use" condition of the enclosure, as shown in Figure 1, ovedies the upper portions of the sides and front of the enclosure to provide a secure and stable construction.
The enclosure will normally be disposed in the condition shown in Figure 2, with the sides 11 and 12 and the two front portions 13 and 14 folded back against the wall and with the top 10 folded down over the sides 11 and 12 and the front portions 13 and 14.
When it is desired to place, for example, a bicycle or lawnmower, within the eneJosure, the components of the enclosure will be opened out, the bicycJe or lawnmower will be placed in the appropriate position, the sides 11 and 12 and the front portions 13 6 and 14 will be moved into the positions shown in Figure 1, and the top 10 lowered into the position shown. The hasp of the lock (not shown) will be passed through the aligned apertures in the brackets 20 and 21 and the whole operation completed in a matter of moments.
It will be appreciated that, in the 1n uW condition shown in Figure 1, access cannot be obtained either to the ends of the hinge pins or to the fasteners used to secure the back of the enclosure to the wall.
In the particular embodiment shown in the drawings, the top 10 of the enclosure is in the form of a single plate-4ike element. If, however, the front to back dimensions are greater, for example, to provide an enclosure to accommodate a motor cycle, the top 10 of the enclosure may be formed as two hingedly connected parts, with the hinge axis between the two parts extending parallel to the wall to which the enclosure is attached.
The particular embodiment shown in the drawings is intended to be used in a location where there is a concrete, paved or tiled floor over which the wheels 19 are readily movable. If, however, there is no solid flooring of this nature, the enclosure may itself include a floor.
