Abstract
A rotary lawn mower is provided with scarifying spikes or prongs mounted on the cutting blade of the lawn mower. These scarifying spikes or prongs may either be attached temporarily (Fig. 6) or permanently (Fig. 3). If the spikes or prongs are temporarily mounted to the cutting blade this may be achieved using pairs of plates which are clamped to opposite ends of the blade, the lowermost of each pair of plates comprising the spike or prong.
Description
SCARIFIER 2337913 This invention relates to a lawn scarifier of the type
which is fixed to, or mounted on, the cutting blade of a rotary lawn mower.
It is accepted that use of a lawn scarifier removes dead grass and other organic matter which accumulates on the soil surface. This increases the circulation of air on the lawn surface and allows light to reach the grass and consequently improves the condition of the lawn and underlying soil.
Lawn scarifiers are available as separate machines but these are relatively expensive and require extra storage space. Only some models of cylinder mowers allow for the cutting cassette to be removed and replaced with a scanifier cassette.
The object of this invention is to provide a type of scarifier which is fixed to, or mounted on, the cutting blade of a rotary lawn mower. Therefore by simply replacing the cutting blade with a scarifying blade, or by attaching brackets to the existing cutting blade, a rotary mower can easily be used as an effective scarifier.
This invention has two possible implementations. The first, provides for a replacement rotary cutting blade with 2 downward facing scarifying soikes or prongs permanently mounted at opposite ends of the cutting blade. This implementation will allow the original rotary cutting blade to be easily removed and replaced by the scarifying blade when required. The second provides two metal or plastic brackets each comprising a downward metal or plastic plate with scarifier spike or prong attached, a metal or plastic base plate, and a means for securing the two metal or plastic plates to opposite ends of the rotary cutting blade.
In either embodiment the sg blade could be fitted with 2 or more spikes or prongs- In either embodiment the scarifying spikes or prongs are made of metal or plastics material or a combination of these materials.
1 A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
FIGURE 1 shows the underside of a rotary lawn mower; FIGURE 2 shows a view of the bottom of the replacement rotary mower cutting blade; FIGURE 3 shows a side view of the replacement rotary mower cutting blade with the scarifier spikes or prongs facing downwards; FIGURE 4 is a section of the rotary mower cutting blade, and shows the scarifying spike or prong; FIGURE 5 shows the scarifying spike mounted on the downward facing metal or plastic plate. The illustration also shows a cross-section of the rotary mower blade clamped between the downward facing metal or plastic plate and the metal or plastic base plate; FIGURE 6 shows the metal or plastic plates and scarifijinga spike or prong clamped to the cutting blade of a rotary lawn mower.
j 4 As previously stated the invention has two possible implerentations. Figures 2 and 3 show the first implementation where it is envisaged the scarifying spikes or prongs will be attached permanently to a rotary cutting blade. The original cutting blade can then be removed and easily replaced by the scg blade when required.
Figures 5 and 6 show the second implementation- The two metal or plastic plates, the scarifying spike or prong plate and the base plate, are clamped to the existing rotary cuttina blade. When the bracket is in place two bolts or clips at either side of the C scarifying spike or prong (1) are tightened to secure the scarifying bracket to the rotary blade. An identical bracket is attached to the opposite end of the rotary blade.
