Abstract

A low energy, mains powered light source is provided in combination with a smoke detector incorporating a rechargeable battery.

Description

2337841 1 Patent application for Light & Life, the combined light bulb and
smoke alarm.
As a serving member in the UK fire service for almost ten years 1 have seen at first hand the cost, both in human suffering and damage to property, that fire causes.
The traditional smoke alarm has been one of the most successful weapons in reducing death and damage in fires for a generation. The problem that has arisen is that the smoke alarm as we know it has not evolved much from the original device with whichwe are familiar.
The traditional smoke alarm has to be screwed to a suitable site, this in itself creates problems, where is a suitable site? does the customer have adequate fools and d.i.y knowledge? is the customer able to reach a suitable position? will customer remember to check battery function? will they be able to reach to replace batteries? Usually after about a year the batteries will require replacement, in reality they are fitted, sometimes in the wrong place and forgotten.
The answer is the Ught & Life combined light bulb and smoke alarm. This device enables anyone to fit a smoke alarm quickly and in the correct position.
2 9811418.4 Summary of its advantages.
No need to change batteries, recharged by mains when light is turned on.
2,- Positioninglis automatic, most)ight fittings are at the highest point in the centre of a room or hallway.
3:- No fitting tools required, standard light fitting already in place.
4;- Adaptability, can be moved from room to room in seconds.
S:- Cost effective, using low energy elements and rechargeable batteries 6,- Much less room for error, no problems with flat unattended batteries and correct positioning will be automatic.

Claims (3)

1. Apparatus comprising a combination of a mains electricity light bulb (or light element) and a battery operated smoke detector, and including a mains rechargeable battery, whereby the supply of mains electricity to the apparatus activates the light bulb and recharges the battery, whereby the smoke detector can operate at all times.
2. Apparatus according to Claim 1 in which the light bulb (or light element) and smoke detector are integrally formed.
3. Apparatus according to Claim 1 or Claim 2 in which the light element is a low energy long-life light element.
