Abstract
A metal component (1) is marked with identification information (16) by applying the identification information to an area (10) which includes surface undulations, the identification information being applied to the area by a method which penetrates the undulations themselves. The method may be laser marking or engraving. The undulations may comprise parallel ridges with troughs therebetween. The component may be a security seal of extruded aluminium, lockable by a member (5) to clamp end portions (6, 7) of a cable (8).
Description
2337503 MARKING METAL COMPONENTS This invention relates to a new or
improved method of marking metal components with identification information.
According to our invention a metal component is marked with identification information by applying the identification information to an area which includes surface undulations, the identification information being applied to the area by a method which penetrates the undulations 10 themselves.
Applying the information over surface undulations increases the security of the component since it is substantially impossible for the information to be removed, defaced or altered without such changes being visibly 15 obvious.
Also such marking adds to the aesthetic effects and enable the information to be read more easily from a distance.
The identification information may be applied to the area by laser marking or by engraving.
When the undulations comprise a series of ribs in the form of parallel ridges with troughs disposed between adjacent ridges, the information preferably penetrates the continuous surface of the ridges and the troughs. This ensures that the information can be removed only by a machining operation which removes an area of the undulations themselves. This, in turn, is conspicuous and indicates that tampering has taken place.
-1 2 When the component comprises the body of a cable security seal, for example for containers or vehicles, the body may be constructed from a metal extrusion provided with at least one area of ribs to which the information, such as a part number or a specific security code, is applied.
One embodiment of our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is an exploded view of a cable security seal, including a section through a body; and Figure 2 is a perspective view of the seal.
The cable security seal illustrated in the drawings comprises a body 1 of generally oblong rectangular outline, suitably in the form of a hollow aluminium extrusion. The extruded body is provided with an open-ended longitudinally extending through passage 2, and a transverse bore 3 positioned at substantially the mid point in the length of the body traverses the passage 2.
The body is adapted to receive a locking member incorporated into a key 5, which is adapted to be screwed into the bore 3 to clamp opposite end portions 6, 7 an inextensible member, suitably a stranded cable 8, against the wall of the passage 2.
The body 1 includes four symmetrically arranged regions of surface undulations 10, 11, 12 and 13. Each region 10, 11, 12 and 13 comprise a series of ribs, in turn comprises parallel ridges 14 with troughs 15 disposed between adjacent ridges and which extend between opposite ends 30 of the body 1.
3 Identification marking "1 2 3 4 Y' is applied to the region 10 over the zone 16 by laser marking with the marking penetrating the continuous surface of the ridges and troughs.
Similar or different markings may also be applied in a similar manner to one or more of the other regions 11, 12 and 13.
In a modification the identification marking may be applied to the body 1 10 by an engraving process.
The method described above may be applied to other metal components, particularly those fulfilling a security purpose.

Claims (7)
1. A method of marking a metal component having an area which includes surface undulations comprising the step of applying the identification information to the said area with the information penetrating the undulations themselves.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the step comprises laser marking.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the step comprises engraving.
4. A method as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the undulations comprise a series of parallel ridges with triangles disposed between adjacent ridges, in which the step causes the information to penetrate the containers surface of the ridges and the troughs.
5. A body of a security seal constructed from a metal extrusion provided with at least one area of ribs to which information is to be applied, in which the information is applied to the said area by a method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4.
6. A method making a metal component substantially as described herein with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
7. A body of a security seal having an area to which identification information is applied by the method of claim 6.
