Abstract

A mattress intended to prevent or minimise pressure sores on heels is disclosed. The mattress consists of first and second portions 2,3 which are constructed of different materials, the second portion providing cushioning for the heels. The second portion is inserted into a lidded pocket in the first portion.

Description

2336108 1 MEDICAL MATTRESS WITH PRESSURE RELIEVING POCKET This invention
relates to a medical mattress, and in particular to a medical mattress with a pressure relieving pocket.
In order to minimise the occurrence of pressure sores and skin maceration in hospitalised patients, it is well-known that the mattress on which a patient lies should be designed so that pressure exerted on any particular part of the patient's anatomy should aim to be near or below capillary pressure (i.e. 32 mmHg) at the interface. If the pressure is higher, then the blood supply to the tissue in that area will be cut-off, causing irreversible necrosis of the skin and underlying tissue.
Hospital beds provided for general use exert a pressure of between 90 and 120 mmHg. This is likely to cause problems if used by patients with low or negligible mobility who are unable to adjust their position by normal body movement. Research has shown that pressure sores are a major cause of death in people over the age of seventy.
The main areas of the body where tissue damage occurs are the scapula, the trochanter, the sacrum and the heels. Pressure sores on heels are a most common problem for elderly patients with poor venous flow or diabetics. Heel sores frequently are the cause that necessitates amputation in these patients.
The present mattress overcomes these problems by being constructed of various open-cell polyurethane foams designed to mould around the bony pron- linences of the body, and to spread the weight load and reduce interface pressure to the scapula and sacrum or the trochanter.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a medical mattress comprising a main body, the main body consisting of first and second portions, the first portion being constructed from a first material, w-4 the second portion being constructed from a second material, the first and second materials being different, and the first portion being substantially larger than the second portion.
Preferably, substantially two thirds of the main body is constructed out of the first material.
In a preferred embodiment, the second portion is situated within the first portion, conveniently by cutting a section from the first portion to produce a pocket into which the 2 second portion can be placed. A liftable flap can be placed over the second portion, thus hiding the second portion from view The liftable flat may be made from soft foam material such as R300S foam, and is held in place by, for example, Velcro PT, im, The first and second materials are preferably constructed from an open- celled foam 5 such as R500 foam and a hollow core polyester fibre cushion, which is inserted into the hoflowed-out second section, respectively.
The main body may be reinforced at its sides by a material such as V38 polyester, and the main body is preferably covered by a two-way, stretchknitted polyester which has been coated with polyurethane. This design of cover ensures that the material moulds around bony prominences of a patient which helps spread the load.
A medical mattress constructed in accordance with the present invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which..
Figure 1 is a plan view of the medical mattress; is Figure 2 is a side view of the medical mattress; and Figure 3 is a side view of the medical mattress showing a liftable flap forming part of the mattress.
Referring to Figure 1, the medical mattress comprises a main body 1, which is divided into two portions 2, 3. The first portion 2, consists of approximately two thirds of the main body 1, and is made from a foam such as R500 foam having a density of 50 k g/M3, and which is constructed to form cells which will mould around the bony prominences of a patient's body when lying on the mattress. The second portion 3 consists of a hollow core polyester fibre material.
The first portion 2 has a section cut out of it to form a pocket in which the second portion 3 is positioned. The second portion 3 is held in place by the surrounding first portion 2.
The main body 1 has a re-inforcer wall 8, encompassing each of its four sides and its base. The re-inforcer wall 8 is made from a strong material such as V38 polyester, and is glued to the first portion 2 of the main body 1 using a strong adhesive such as Vitabond 3 0 3 06 glue to ensure a permanent bond.
3 A liftable flap 4, constructed from a soft foam material such as R300S foam, covers the second portion 3. One end of the liftable flap 4 is glued to an end of the first portion 2. The opposite end of the liftable flap 4 has a means for connecting it to the neighbouring part of the re- inforcer wall 8, the connecting means, for example, consisting of a Velcro C-1 strip with a smooth part 6, and a burr part 7, whereupon the smooth part is attached to the fiftable flap 4 and the burr part is attached to the re-inforcer wall 8.
When the liftable flap 4 is in its closed position (see Figure 2), the second portion 3 is hidden from view. The liftable flap 4 can be lifted to its open position (see Figure 3) such that the second portion 3 can be inserted into the pocket within the first portion 2.
An outer covering 9 covers the entire surface of the main body 1. The outer covering 9 is constructed from a two-way, stretch-knitted polyester which has been coated with polyurethane. The stretch of this covering 8 ensures that the material moulds around the bony prominences of the patient which helps to spread the load.
All seams within the mattress construction are high frequency welded or heat sealed to prevent fluid penetration.
One of the most important features of this mattress is the hollowed-out pocket in section 2, in which pocket a cushion of hollow core siliconised fibre is placed. This is then covered by the R300S foam which completes the heel cushion, giving exceptionally good interface pressure readings on the heels.
