Abstract

A baking tin for baking bread comprises a lid 12 and a main body portion 11 which, in cross-section, is formed from a base 13 and upstanding sides 14,15, one of the sides 15 and the adjacent portion 13a of the base being plane while the remaining portion 13b of the base and the adjacent side 14 are shaped to permit a loaf baked in the tin to be removed after baking. The lid 12 may be shaped to correspond to the shape of the further portion 13b and side wall 14, and fit on the main body portion 11 along a line XX which is not parallel to the base 13. The shape of the tin and lid is symmetrical about line AB so that a slice of a loaf made in the tin can be cut diagonally along a line corresponding to line AB to produce two complementary, generally triangular pieces to form a sandwich.

Description

2335586 1 BAKING TIN The present invention relates to a baking tin and
more particularly but not exclusively to a baking tin for baking bread.
Baking tins come in a variety of shapes and sizes and baking tins with lids are also known.
Bread itself also comes in a variety of shapes and sizes and it is known to produce bread especially for commercial sandwich manufacturers which has a square sectional shape so that when cut in half diagonally the two halves can be laid one on top of the other and will match almost exactly.
While this is satisfactory for many purposes, there is a market for bread which gives the appearance of a traditional loaf i.e. it appears to have risen beyond "the confines of the top of the baking tin. While it is possible to cut a slice of bread in this manner diagonally in order to make a sandwich the two halves do not match and produce an unattractive sandwich.
There is therefore need for a baking tin which will allow a slice of traditionally shaped bread to be cut diagonally so as to produce halfslices which each appear to come from the top of the loaf only and match each other when placed on top of one another to form a sandwich.
From one aspect, the present invention provides a baking tin comprising a main body portion and a lid, the lid being arranged to fit on to the main body portion along a join line which is not parallel to the base of the baking tin.
From another aspect, the present invention provides a baking tin comprising a main body portion and a lid, the main portion being formed with a base and upstanding sides, one of the sides and the adjacent portion of the base being plane while the remaining portion of the base and the adjacent side are shaped.
C:OMCE\V;PWTN\WPDOCS\SPEC\BLUE\ALL[ED1.SPC 2 i The shaping of the side and part of the base is designed to permit the loaf to be removed from the fin after baking but to give the appearance of having risen naturally from the confines of a conventional baking tin.
In order that the present invention be more readily understood, an embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Fig. 1 shows an end view of a baking tin according to the present invention; and Fig. 2 shows a slice of bread baked in the tin shown in Fig. 1.
Looking first at Fig. 1, a baking tin 10 according to the invention comprises a main body portion 11 and a lid 12. The main body portion 11 comprises a base 13 with upstanding walls 14 and 15. The lid 12 comprises a shaped top 16 andjoins the main body portion 11 along aline XX which joins the upstanding side walls 14 and 15 but is not parallel to the base 13.
The base 13 comprises a generally straight portion 13a. and shaped portion 13b. The shape of the portion 13b is dictated by the intended finished shape of the bread to be cooked in the tin. Equally, the shape of the top 16 of the lid 12 is also determined by the final shape of the bread to be cooked in the tin.
The tin thus has a cross-sectional shape which has only one corner formed by the generally straight portion Ba of the base and the upstanding wall 11.
The shape of the fin and lid is designed to be symmetrical about the line AB shown in Fig. 1 which is at an angle to the base other than a right angle and extends through the corner of the main body portion. Due to the somewhat irregular nature of the shape formed by the upstanding wall 14 and the base 13, it is necessary for the junction between the lid and the base portion of the tin to be not parallel to the base 13. This is to enable the bread to be removed from the tin by firstly removing the lid 12 from the baked bread and then by removing the baked bread from the main body portion 11.
C:\OFFICE\WPVN,WPDOCS\SPEC\BLUE\ALLIED I.SPC 3 If one now turns to Fig. 2, this shows a slice of bread as produced by the tin shown in Fig. 1 and the lines AB and Y-X are indicated. It will be seen that if the slice of bread were to be cut along the line AB extending through the one corner of the slice and the left hand portion of the cut slice folded on to the right hand portion of the cut slice, they would overlap almost exactly and produce a pleasing shape of sandwich, each part of which appears to be from the top of the loaf only.
In order to enhance the appearance of the bread it is possible to process the loaf after baking in the tin and removal therefrorn so as to, for example, produce a slightly overcooked effect on the surface of the shaped portions of the bread, such as would be the result of cooking a conventional loaf using a conventional tin. This may be achieved, for example, by firing the shaped portions.
A loaf of bread is thus produced, each slice of which has a diagonal axis of symmetry and so sandwiches can be produced which are all identical and do not require any special treatment in order to produce identical sandwiches. Despite the complex shape of the loaf, it can be readily baked in a lidded tin and removed therefrom without difficulty.
