Abstract

A bottle cap 10 has a cap body 16 with resilient bellows 18 integrally formed therewith. The bellows may include a relatively rigid peripheral portion 18a, and a domed portion 18b with walls that are thinner than the peripheral portion. The cap may include an annular flange 20 for receiving a snap fit pipette (21, fig 2), the annular flange also acting as a seal against a container neck. The cap may include an upstanding tubular extension 50 which protects the bellows and acts as a stacking portion. The cap may be made from low density polypropylene.

Description

2335185 A BOTTLE CAP The present invention relates to a bottle cap, in
particular but not exclusively a bottle cap for a bottle intended to contain a fluid such as ink or paint.
The invention is more particularly aimed at providing a bottle cap made from a plastics material in one piece and which includes an integral resilient bellows for a pipette.
io According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a bottle cap having a cap body for connection to the neck of a bottle to which the cap is to be attached and a resilient bellows connected to the cap body, the cap being moulded in one piece from a plastics material so that the cap body and bbllows are integrally connected.
Preferably, the cap body is defined by a tubular member having opposed axial ends, one axial end being closed by a wall defining said resilient bellows and the other axial end being open to define a mouth for receiving the neck of a bottle.
Preferably the tubular member is provided with an internal annular seat adjacent to said one axial end for connection with a pipette. Preferably said seat is adapted to be a snap fit connection with said pipette.
Preferably said internal annular scat is formed on an annular flange which projects in an axial direction within the tubular body, the annular flange preferably also defining a seat for sealingly engaging the neck of the bottle.
1 1 The wall 18 has an outer peripheral marginal portion 18a which extends in a diametric plane internally from the tubular body 16. The marginal portion 18a is relatively rigid and supports an internal flange 20 which extends axially within the tubular body 16 toward its mouth 19.
The wall 18 has a central portion which is shaped in the form of a dome 18b and which has a relatively thin wall section so as to define a resilient bellows for pipette 21 (shown only in Figure 2). Preferably the wall thickness of the outer marginal region 18c of the dome 18b adjacent to the lo marginal portion 18a is relatively thick and thereby is relatively rigid.
Also the central area 18e of the dome 18b is preferably of concave form Preferably the wall thickness in central area 18e is thicker than in region 18d. The combination of central area 18.c and the marginal region 18c. This has the effect of restricting deformation of the dome 18b to region 15 18d when the dome 18 is depressed. This facilitates recovery of the dome 18b to its original shape after deformation.
The pipette 21 includes an annular base 25 from which depends a hollow stem 28. The annular flange 20 includes an annular groove 22 which 2o defines an annular seat for the location of the base 25. Preferably the outer diameter of the base 25 is slightly greater than the inner diameter of groove 22 such that the base is held under compression when received within the groove 22. This a in providing a sealing connection between the dome 18b and the pipette 21.
Preferably the outer edge of the base 26 is chamfered in order to provide a lead in face to facilitate entry of the base into groove 22.
3 According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a bottle cap as defined above in combination with a pipette mounted within the cap.
Various aspects of the present invention are hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:- Figure 1 is an exploded side view, partly in section, of a bottle and bottle cap according to one embodiment of the present invention shown without a pipette; Figure 2 is a side view, partly in section, of the bottle and cap of Figure 1 shown assembled and including a pipette; Figure 3 is an enlarged part sectional side view of the bottle and cap of Figure 2; Figure 4 is an enlarged part sectional view showing the stacking inter- relationship between a bottle cap and a bottle according to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figure 1.
A bottle cap according to an embodiment of the present invention is generally shown at 10 and is intended to be connected to the neck 12 of a bottle 14.
The bottle 14 may be formed from any suitable material such as glass or plastics and is preferably intended to contain a fluid 15 such as paint or ink.
The cap includes a tubular body 16 which at one axial end is closed by a wall 18 and which is open at its opposite axial end to define a mouth 19 for the reception of the neck 12 of the bottle.
2 Preferably the bottle has a recessed bottom wall 60 defining an annular flange 61. The internal diameter of the flange 61 is such as to enable the tubular extension 50 to be located therem as illustrated in Figure 4. This advantageously enables the bottles with caps attached to be stacked one on 5 top of the other without causing depression of the dome 18b.
Tubular extension 50 defines a continuous wall surrounding the dome 18b. It is appreciated however that the wall may be formed by discrete wall portions spaced about the dome 18b, in order to achieve the same effect.
The cap 10 is preferably injection moulded from a suitable plastics material such as low density polypropylene. The pipette 21 is conveniently moulded from a plastics material such as polyethylene.
Accordingly the pipette 21 can be simply attached to the bottle cap 10 by a snap fit connection and does not have to rely upon additional fixing means such as glue. It is however appreciated that glue may be utilised if desired.
Preferably the outer face 20a of the annular flange 20 is inclined axially and the terminal end 40 of the neck 12 of the bottle is preferably chamfered in order to provide a sealing face 30 for sealing abutment with face 20a. The internal face of the tubular body 16 and the outer face of the neck 12 are preferably provided with co-operating screw thread lo formations 45, 46 respectively in order to enable the cap 10 to be screw threadedly connected to the neck of the bottle.
Preferably the co-operating screw thread formations 45, 46 enable the faces 20a and 30 to sealingly engage one another on tightening the cap 10 onto the neck 12 and thereby ensure that the faces sealingly abut one another. To ensure that faces 20a, 30 engage they are arranged so as to act as stop faces when tightening the cap 10 onto the neck 12. This is achieved by ensuring that there is a clearance gap d and D between opposed end faces on the neck 12 and cap 10 when the faces 20a, 30 are in contact.
Preferably the úap, 10 further includes a tubular extension 50 which extends beyond said one end to surround the dome 18b.'Preferably the terminal 51 end of the tubular extension is located above the maximum height of the dome 18b. This provides an advantage of protecting the dome 18b from being depressed by articles being place on top of the cap 10 for example during storage or transportation.

Claims (1)

  1. 7. A bottle cap according to any of Claims 3 to 6 wherein the cap body
    includes a tubular extension which extends axially beyond said dome.
    8. A bottle cap according to any of Claims 2 to 7 wherein the tubular member is provided with an internal annular seat adjacent to said one axial end for connection with a pipette.
    9. A bottle cap according to Claim 8 wherein said seat is adapted to be a snap fit connection with said pipette.
    10. A bottle cap according to Claim 8 or 9 wherein said annular seat is formed on an annular flange which projects in an axial direction within the tubular body, the annular flange preferably also defining a seat for 15 sealingly engaging the neck of the bottle.
    11. A bottle cap according to any preceding claim wherein said plastics material is a low density polypropylene.
    12. A bottle cap substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in any of the accompanying drawings.
    13. In combination, a bottle cap according to any preceding claim and a pipette mounted therein.
    14. In combination, a bottle and a bottle cap according to any preceding claim.
