Abstract

A method of joining first (5) and second (8) parts together, the second part carrying at least one projection (10) for penetration of the first part. The method is preferably used for securing a block (5) made of cellular or fibrous material such as polyurethane to a base plate (8) made of a suitable thermoplastic material. The base plate (8) carries one or more projecting formations (10), shown as individual pointed formations. The two parts (5,8) are secured together by bringing them into contact so that the formations (10) pierce the block (5) and become at least partially positioned between adjacent fibres (6). Heat may be applied so as partially to soften the formations (10) prior to bringing the block (5) and the base (8) together.

Description

SECURING MATERIALS TOGETHER The invention relates to the securing of materials together.
Methods according to the invention, to be described below by way of example only, relate to methods of attaching two different parts together in a simple and effective manner. Products embodying the invention, and made by such methods, will also be described, again by way of example only.
By way of example only, one of the materials may be thermoplastics material and the other may be a thermoplastics material or other cellular or fibrous material.
According to the invention, there is provided a method of securing first and second parts together, in which the second part carries at least one projecting formation which at least partially enters the material of the first part when the two parts are pressed relatively together, whereby to secure the two parts together.
According to the invention, there is further provided a product, comprising first and second parts joined together, in which the second part carries at least one projecting formation which has at least partially enters the material of the first part, whereby to secure the two parts together.
Methods according to the invention of securing materials together, and products embodying the invention and incorporating such materials secured together, will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 is a cross-section through two different materials showing a stage in one of the methods; and Figure 2 corresponds to Figure 1 but shows a later stage in the method.
Figure 1 shows a block or layer 5 of a first material which, in this example, is foamed or cellular material such as polyurethane, some of the cells being shown diagrammatically at 6. The block 5 is to be attached to a base 8 which, in this example, is moulded from a thermoplastics material.
The base 8 carries formations 10 in the form of individual pointed protuberances of any suitable shape. Instead, they may be in the form of longitudinally and parallely extending triangular cross-section ribs. Other differently shaped formations may be used instead. The formations 10 are advantageously produced integrally on the base 8 by the moulding process.
In order to secure the block 5 to the base 8, the formations 10 are heated, such as by infra-red heating or a similar method so as to soften them. The shape of the formations 10 is such that they concentrate the applied heat. The block 5 is then pressed into contact with the base 5 so that the formations 10 become forced into the cellular material of the block 5 and, in particular, become forced between and into the cells 6. A mechanical attachment is thereby produced which does not require chemical compatability between the two materials.
Various modifications may be made. For example, other thermoplastic materials may be joined using the methods described. In particular, the material of the block 5 may be fibrous or incorporate embedded fibres. The formations 10 become forced between the fibres to provide the required mechanical attachment.
The method described is advantageous because no preparation of the contacting surfaces is necessary (which is required if the two materials are to be attached by adhesive, or hot-melting).
The method can be entirely automated.
CLAIMS 1. A method of securing first and second parts together, in which the second part carries at least one projecting formation which at least partially enters the material of the first part when the two parts are pressed relatively together, whereby to secure the two parts together.
2. A method according to claim 1, including the step of applying heat to the formation before it at least partially enters the material of the second part.
3. A method according to claim 1 or 2, in which the material of the first part is cellular material, and in which the formation becomes positioned between and in the cells.
4. A method according to any preceding claim, in which the material of the first part comprises polyurethane material.
5. A method according to any preceding claim, in which the material of the first part is fibrous or includes fibres.
6. A method according to my preceding claim, in which the first part is made of material which is softer than the material of the second part.
