Abstract

An intumescent collar for surrounding a pipe (10, figure 4) where it penetrates a wall comprises a longitudinally split member (12, figure 1), the individual sections of which are connected at the inner surface of the member, preferably by hinges 16 with removable hinge pins 18, to enable the collar to be opened for fitting around the pipe. The member, which is preferably cylindrical, is lined with intumescent material 32 which, in a fire, expands to fill the gap between the collar and the pipe, the exterior surface of the collar already being fitted tightly in an aperture in the wall, to provide a fire proof barrier. The connection means may comprise a snap fitting tongue and groove arrangement, rather than using the removable hinge pins described above. A flange 20 may be spot welded to the cylindrical member at one end, the flange extending internally 24 and/or externally 22 of the cylindrical member. The external flange member 22, which may comprise a plurality of lugs rather than a continuous rim, preferably includes fixing holes 26 for attaching the collar to the wall. The flange may be cut back at the longitudinal splits 14 to form a recess 28,30 on each side of the hinge to permit relative pivotal movement between the individual sections (see figure 4). The cylindrical member is preferably split into two halves, but may be split into three or more individual sections if required. The cylindrical member may have a circular or rectangular cross-section.

Description

In tumescent Collar The present invention concerns improvements in relating to intumescent collars. Intumescent collars are provided to fit around pipes which pass through walls or partitions which serve as fire barriers. The collar is intended to fit snugly into a hole formed through the wall and around the pipe and it includes, normally on its inner periphery, at least one layer of intumescent material which, when raised to elevated temperatures by a fire expands to fully fill the gap between the pipe and the collar thereby ensuring a fire barrier is maintained.
A considerable disadvantage is experienced with existing intumescent collars. The collars, which are normally cylindrical, have to be split longitudinally into at least two sections to enable fitment around the pipe prior to the collar being slid into the gap between the pipe and the internal surface of the hole through the wall. For convenience, existing collars are pivotable along one longitudinal split line by a hinge placed on the outer surface of the collar.
An over centre toggle arrangement is provided on the other longitudinal split line so that the collar can be held around the pipe once it has been fitted.
According to the present invention there is provided an intumescent collar comprising a hollow member incorporating at least two longitudinal splits permitting disassembly of the member and connection means at each split located on the inner surface of the member, the member being provided with a lining of intumescent material extending over substantially its entire internal surface.
Preferably the connection means at each split comprises a hinge with a removable hinge pin such that by removing a hinge pin one part of the member can be pivoted relative to the other about the other hinge.
Preferably the intumescent material comprises a plurality of layers each attached to its neighbour.
Preferably the hollow member is provided with a flange at one end. The flange may be attached to the member by spot welding.
Preferably the flange extends internally and/or externally of the hollow member.
Preferably the externally extending flange has fixing holes formed therethrough.
Preferably the flange is cut back at the longitudinal splits to permit relative pivotal movement between the parts of the hollow member.
The hollow member is preferably cylindrical but it may be rectangular or any other configuration.
In one embodiment, the externally projecting flange may be substituted by a plurality of externally extending lugs.
In a further embodiment the connection means comprise snap fitting tonge and groove assemblies.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of an intumescent collar; Fig. 2 shows a sectional elevation of the collar; Fig. 3 shows a plan view from above; and Fig. 4 shows a plan view from above with the collar being fitted around a pipe.
An intumescent collar for fitting into a hole in a wall or partition (not shown) around a pipe or duct 10 (Fig. 4) comprises a cylindrical member 12 of sheet steel provided with two diametrically opposed, longitudinally extending slits 14 dividing the collar into two half cylinders.
Connection means 16 in the form of a hinge are provided on the interior surface of the cylinder 12 at each slit 14. The hinge pin 18 of each hinge 16 is removable such that one half of the cylinder can be pivotted away from the other after removal of the pin, about the remaining pin.
The cylindrical member 12 carries a sheet steel flange 20 at one of its ends, the flange having an externally projecting section 22 and an internally projecting section 24. The externally projecting flange 22 may have fixing holes 26 formed therethrough. Each flange is slit coincident with the longitudinal slit lines 14 and is cut back at the split as illustrated at 28 and 30 in Fig. 3.
The collar is provided with a lining 32 of intumescent material which extends over its entire inner surface and incorporates a longitudinally extending slit coincident with the slit 14 in the cylindrical member 12; The intumescent lining 32 may comprise a plurality of layers fixed to each other and to the inner surface of the member 12 by a suitable adhesive. The inwardly directed flange 24 has an internal diameter which coincides with the internal diameter of the intumescent lining 32.
In operation, a collar of the correct size is selected to fit a pipe 10 which is to pass through a wall or partition forming a fire barrier. The external diameter of the pipe 10 determines the internal diameter of the intumescent layer and consequently the diameter of the cylindrical member 12. When this has been determined a neat circular hole of the same diameter as the external diameter of the cylindrical member 12 is formed through the wall. The pipe is then passed through the wall and, obviously, a clearance space will exist between the pipe and the internal surface of the drilled hole. This is filled by the intumescent collar. One of the two hinge pins 18 is removed from the collar and it is opened about the remaining hinge pin 18 as illustrated in Fig. 4.
It can then be passed around the pipe and dosed so that it returns to the configuration shown in Figs. 1 to 3 at which stage the removed hinged pin 18 is replaced in the hinge 16, the leaves of which will then be alignment. The assembled collar can then be slid over the surface of the pipe into the hole such that its externally extending flange 22 abuts the face of the wall and, if necessary, it can be fixed thereto by screws passing through the fixing holes.
Alternatively, if it is not possible to form a hole in the wall of sufficient size to receive the collar, the collar can be arranged over the pipe 10 such that the flange 22 abuts the wall and the cylindrical member 12 extends outwardly therefrom. The flange 22 can then be fixed to the wall by screws passing through the fixing holes.
In the event of a fire the intumescent lining 32 will expand and since the cylindrical member 12 is a tight fit within the hole of the wall the expanding intumescent member will occupy and fill any gap between the collar and the pipe thereby ensuring that there is no fire or gas passage between the pipe and the wall.
Various modifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention, for example the collar, rather than being split into two parts can be split into three or more parts. Alternative interconnection means between the collar parts can be provided and it is desirable that each of these provides a hinge connection when assembled and an opening when disassembled. The connectors can, for example, take the form of a tongue on one section which is relatively flexible and can be snap fitted into a groove carried by the other section.
Either the external or internal or both flanges can be dispensed with but it is preferable that at least an externally extending flange or equivalent thereof for example a plurality of lugs is provided on one end of the cylindrical member.
The flange may be attached to the end of the member by spot welding either directly to the cylindrical member or to lugs projecting externally from the member and formed during a formation of the cylindrical member.
