Abstract

The seat support B comprises an outer post 3 that fits into a bicycle frame, a tube 4 that slides within the post and elastomeric elements 5 that act between the post and the tube to provide suspension for a seat attached at A. The compression of springs 6 can be adjusted, by rotating a nut 7 along a central rod, to alter the tension of the elastomeric elements and the extent of their rebound after being compacted. The tube has a square section 1 which cooperates with small rollers 2 to restrict the rotation of the tube within the post. The exposed parts of the post may be enclosed in rubber and oil may be provided to lubricate the tube sliding in the post.

Description

Insulated bicycle seat post This invention relates to a sprung or insulated seat post for a bicycle in the form of a tube sliding inside the outer seat post so as to insulate the bicycle riders seat from shocks from the road At present bicycles rely on their pneumatic tyres to insulate the rider from the road. Some bicycles have suspension units on front forks and occasionally on the rear wheel. This invention is a simple bolt on adaptation for the majority of bicycles without rear wheel suspension which gives suspension to the seat of the bicycle.
According to the present invention the seat post tube is refashioned in to a sprung unit with or without a shock absorber component. This may be composed of plastic (elastomer) components, metal springs, gas, liquid or oil providing the insulation of the rider from the road.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The attached drawing illustrates the seat post sprung with elastomer(plastic) components Referring to the drawing, the bicycle seat attaches at (A) and the tube (B) fits into the frame of the bicycle, exposed parts may be enclosed in a rubber boot. The seat post comprises a tube (4) sliding within the outer seat post (3) using oil lubrication. The rotation of the tube is controlled by a square section (1) at the top with small rollers (2). Movement of the seat post is allowed by compression of the elastomers (5). The tension on these elastomers and the rebound phase after compression is adjusted by a nut (7) compressing springs (6) all of which are located by a central rod.

Claims (4)

  1. Claims 1 A sprung bicycle seat post which bolts to the frame of the bicycle in the normal way and to which the seat is attached.
  2. 2 A sprung bicycle seat post as claimed in Claim 1 which may have an integral shock absorber
  3. 3 A sprung bicycle seat post as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the method of suspension is by metal, plastic, liquid or gas.
  4. 4 A sprung bicycle seat post as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 where the rotation is restricted by a square section of tubing and suitable bushes or rollers
