Abstract

An exercise deuce for small animals, consisting of a hollow sphere 1 mounted in a gimballed support 3,5 that the sphere can rotate freely.

Description

STATIONARY ROTATING EXERCISE BALL FOR SMALL ANIMALS The present invention relates to devices for the exercising of small animals and more specifically to such devices incorporating a hollow sphere in which an animal to be exercised can be placed.
Irrespective of the size of an animal it is necessary for the animal to be exercised regularly. A known device for the exercising of small animals such as mice, hamsters or gerbils is a transparent hollow sphere in which the animal is placed by means of a securable hatch. The sphere is placed upon the ground and as the animal moves within the sphere, so the sphere moves over the ground. However, the sphere has to be watched to ensure that it does not become trapped under furniture or that the hatch does not become opened, so enabling the animal to escape.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved exercise ball for small animals.
According to the present invention, there is provided an exercise ball for a small animal comprising a hollow sphere including a securable hatch by means of which an appropriately sized animal can be placed in or removed from the sphere and a support structure for the sphere including a mounting for the sphere adapted to allow the sphere to rotate freely about at least two orthogonal axes.
A suitable mounting for the sphere is a gimbal structure. Preferably the sphere is transparent.
In one embodiment of the invention the mounting comprises a two-ring gimbal system the outer ring of which is fixed in relation to the base member and to the inner ring of which the sphere rotatably attached.
The invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which, Figure 1 is a sectional view of an exercise ball for small animals, embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a plan view of the exercise ball shown in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a section of one axle system incorporated in the exercise ball of Figure 1, Figure 3.1 is a section of a second axle system incorporated in the exercise ball of Figure 1, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of a base member forming part of the embodiment of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, an exercise ball for small animals includes a hollow ventilated transparent sphere 1 which has a securable access hatch 2 by means of which a small animal such as a hamster or gerbil to be exercised can be placed in or removed from the sphere 1. The sphere 1 is journaled to an inner ring 3 of a gimbal arrangement by pivot pins 4a and 4b. The inner ring 3 is journaled to an outer ring 5 of the gimbal structure by pivot pins 6a and 6b. The outer ring 5 of the gimbal structure is integral with one part 7 of a cruciform base member 8. The base member 8 is assembled as shown in Figure 4.
In a second embodiment of the invention, which is not illustrated, the gimbal structure is replaced by a horizontal ring having four regularly spaced rollers upon which the sphere containing the sphere sits.
In both embodiments of the invention the animal is enabled to exercise freely without moving from the position in which the device is placed, so removing the need to watch continually its activity.
