Abstract
A dimmer, eg. for a bedside table lamp, is formed as a unit which is mounted in-line in the mains cable feeding the lamp, Fig.2. The dimmer circuitry is housed in a plastics container 3 having a protruding knob 1 for setting lamp brightness. There are no clicks or other noises when the knob 1 is rotated between the fully anti-clockwise OFF position and the fully clockwise full-brightness position.
Description
CABLE SWITCH
This invention relates to a cable dimmer switch that is mounted inside a container and is used to vary the electrical power that passes through a cable. This could typically be used to vary the brightness of a table lamp.
Dimmer light switches are commonly used but are all of a similar type in that they all have to be mounted in an enclosure fitted to a wall. Switches that are installed to cables are not dimmer switches and make a clicking sound when switched either on or off.
An object of this invention is to provide a cable switch that allows a power supply to be gradually turned on and off.
This cable switch circuit is silent as some switches have a tendency to make a loud click when operated.
One embodiment of this invention provides (claim 1) a cable dimmer switch fitted to a container and wired to a dimmer circuit held within that container.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows the cable switch from a raised side elevation.
Figure 2 shows the cable switch connected to a typical bedside light
As shown in figure 1 the cable switch comprises of a plastic container 3 which houses a dimmer circuit of the type obtainable from the Maplin catalogue
September 1997 to February 1998 order code FQ 1 or. The cable enters the hole 4 and is connected to the dimmer circuit inside the container it then exits the container through a second hole on the opposite side of hole 4. The cable entry and exit is more clearly shown in figure 2.
The operation of the dimmer control knob 1 is such that when turned to the fully clockwise position the power is off. Gradually as the knob is rotated clockwise the light illuminates and increases in intensity until the lamp reaches full brightness.
There are no clicks or noises when the cable switch is operated and turned from the fully anti-clockwise position to the fully clockwise position or vice versa.
The plastic body 3 has a lid 2 that can be removed in order to connect the power supply cable to the dimmer circuit.
This type of cable switch is of particular use when used as a bedside light, where a person may require a bright light to read by late at night but a dimmer light when getting up in the morning to avoiding waking a partner that is still asleep, for example.
Claims (1)
- CLAIMS 1) A self contained cable switch and variable dimmer.2) A cable switch as in claim 1 that is securely connected to a power cable.3) A cable switch as in claims 1 and 2 that is silent when switched from the fully off to the fully on position.5) A cable switch as claimed in any preceding claim which is of a plastic material.6) A self contained cable switch substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
