Abstract
The cot has a fixed divider 1 across it's centre to separate the cot into two sections 4, each section has a sloping mattress (7, fig 2) , there are three sets of sloping mattress fixtures (3, fig 2) and a storage space (4, fig 2) is provided beneath the mattresses. The cot is divided so as to provide two separate sleeping areas, preferably the mattresses are arranged such that the baby's head is raised by two inches and the fixtures are such that the there are three possible height levels for the mattresses. Preferably the storage space is accessible via openings (8, fig 3) at the front of the cot and the cot is assembled by slotting parts together.
Description
TWIN COT
This invention relates to a twin cot
A cot, ie a tall sided bed, is used in most households for babies to sleep in. In households where there are multiple births, the usual practice is to buy more than one cot and more than one item for storage. This takes up a lot of space and money. The use of more than one cot is very tiring for the parents, who may have to tend to the babies in more than one location, if the cots are not together due to lack of space and even painful for the mother of the newborn twins, as her body will not yet have recovered from pregnancy and childbirth. All cots should take into account the needs of the mother and the babies but, in the case of multiple births, this hasn't been done.
According to the present invention the exterior of the cot is the same, but now a fixed divider is added crossways at the centre of the cot. The babies can be placed foot to foot on either side of the divider. There are three sets of sloping mattress fixtures. There is storage space.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective, the cot, the divider, the base & storage space.
Figure 2 shows in perspective, the cot, the divider & the bedding areas at level 2.
Figure 3 shows in perspective, the cot, the divider, the bedding areas, level 1 & access to storage space.
Referring to the drawing a fixed divider (figl,NQl) is added crossways at the centre of the cot so that in effect the cot now has six sides. There are two bedding areas, one on either side of the divider (fig2,N 7) the babies can be placed foot to foot in the cot, so that they do not disturb or harm one another. T here is storage space (fig2,N24) access is via an opening at the front of the cot (fig3,N 8).
There are three sets of height level fixtures for each mattress. Level 1 (fig3,N 6) is for the first months when the mother's spine is still soft and stretched. She is unable to bend and lift the babies without feeling pain. So the mattresses are high up enough for her to reach the babies without stretching, or bending. During these first months the babies are waking constantly during the night and a lot of damage can be done to parents bending and lifting so frequently, as they tend to the babies. Parents can feed, wind and change the babies without lifting them out at all.
This level is of use to any parent suffering from back problems. This level can be used until the babies are able to stand up unaided. The matresses are lowered to Level 2 (fig2,N 7) when the babies are able to stand up unaided and are also, by then, sleeping through the night. The babies can pull themselves up and hold on to the rail for support. By then the mother should be physically able to lift the babies without hurting herself. The matresses are lowered to Level 3 (fig2,N5) when the babies are walking and able to climb.
There are sloping mattress fixtures(fig2,NQ3) so that the head of the bedding areas (fig2,N 7) are always raised by two inches, so that the babies' heads are raised and the mattresses slope downwards towards the divider (fig2,N2l ). This assists the babies breathing. Eases their digestion and the passage of wind. Reduces the risk of colic. Reduces the likelihood of them choking in their vomit.
